City of Tucson Opens New Cooling Center as Summer Heats Up
Two new “COOLtainers,” provided by the Arizona Department of Health Services and the governor’s office, were placed at the Amazon Shelter, 1135 W. Miracle Mile, to provide a restful place for people to get out the sun and heat. The Amazon is a shelter operated by the Housing First Division of the City of Tucson’s Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD).

Need to cool off? Visit one of the many cooling centers located throughout Tucson. Cooling centers will be open from June 1 - August 31, from noon - 4 p.m., daily. Cooling centers are closed on holidays.

 On June 18, City of Tucson Mayor and Council held a public hearing and later approved unanimously the Planned Area Development (PAD) for the Amphi Housing First Resource Center, the former Fire Station 8 building on King Road.
During the study session before the evening public hearing, Housing & Community Development Director Ann Chanecka gave a presentation on the project background and the community outreach conducted by HCD to inform neighbors of the proposal.

 The Sugar Hill Neighborhood Banners is a project co-designed by a Public Art Panel composed of community stakeholders and lead artist, Peniel Macias. The banners are displayed on light poles along the east side of Stone Ave, from Grant Road to Lee Street.
This community design opportunity was initiated to serve as creative placemaking for the Sugar Hill neighborhood, in partnership with the Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona and Thrive in the 05 made possible through Transformation Plan funding.
