July is National Parks and Recreation Month
'Our Parks and Recreation Story'
It’s time to share Our Parks and Recreation Story! We’re celebrating Parks and Recreation Month this July by highlighting some stories of how our communities are stronger, more vibrant, and more resilient because of parks and recreation.
Parks are at the center of so many experiences and memories — moments that park and recreation professionals help make happen. Our local parks are often our first experiences in nature, our introduction to a favorite hobby, or physical activity. They are places to gather with friends and family, spaces to celebrate life’s special moments, spots of respite and healing, sites that connect us with essential community services and so much more.
In addition to us sharing our story, we want to hear your stories about what parks and recreation means to you. Share your story with us on our social media, tag us, and use the hashtag #OurParkAndRecStory.

Last spring we piloted a free outdoor recreation program called Meet Me at the Park. We offered free classes at six parks in Tucson. We want to offer more classes this fall, but we want to hear from you to find out what types of classes and at what locations you are interested in taking them. Take the survey here. |
Financial Assistance for Preschool
Pima County and its partners in the Pima Early Education Program (PEEP) are offering financial assistance to eligible low-income families for their children to attend high-quality preschools through Pima Early Education Program Scholarships, or PEEPs. Approved by the Pima County Board of Supervisors in May, the plan allocates up to $10 million in County funds, as well as almost $3 million from cities, towns, and other partners, to assist the families of 1,245 children with preschool costs. The City of Tucson Mayor and Council directed $1 million to support and expand the program, making it possible for more low-income families to take advantage of a safe and enriching education space for their children without the barrier of cost. To qualify for preschool financial assistance, a family must have a household income at or below 200% of the federal poverty level, which varies depending on family size. For example, a family of four must have a total household income of $53,000 or less. The scholarships are available for children ages 3 to 5 who are not yet in kindergarten. Preschools are enrolling students now at 170 locations across Pima County for classes that begin as early as July. Read the news release

On Nov. 6, 2018, the City of Tucson voters approved Proposition 407, a $225 million bond package for capital improvements via General Obligation bonds. The bond funds are dedicated to improving City park amenities (playgrounds, sports fields, pools, splash pads, and recreation center) as well as connections (pedestrian pathways, bicycle pathways, pedestrian and bicycle safety). Projects will happen in phases through 2028. Thank you, Tucson voters! For more information on all the projects planned using Tucson Delivers bond funds, visit TucsonDelivers.Tucsonaz.gov.
Reffkin Tennis Center Improvements
The tennis courts at Reffkin Tennis Center are scheduled to be complete later this month. The project included refurbishing and repair of 20 existing courts, rebuilding three older courts with new concrete slabs, replacement and upgrading of all the electrical wiring for the lighting system, and refurbishing of four existing shade structures.
Two new ADA ramps will be installed for the raised courts. Reffkin Tennis Center is one of the premier large tournament centers in the Southwest, hosting players from all over the U.S. It is now home to the University of Arizona Wheelchair Tennis team.
The project was designed by GLHN Architects and Engineers, constructed by Lloyd Construction, and subcontractors Commonwealth Electric, Elite Sports court resurfacing, and Sahara Development concrete work.
