COVID-19 THURSDAY UPDATE - As of today, Oct. 29, Arizona now has 242,480 positive coronavirus cases, with 1,315 new cases reported today (up from 1,044 yesterday). The total number of cases includes people who have recovered. Of that number, 28,067 cases are in Pima County (up 128 from yesterday). There have been 5,905 COVID-19 deaths in Arizona (14 reported today), and 638 of those occurred in Pima County (2 reported today). Meanwhile, the City of Tucson maintains an up-to-date COVID-19 website (link below) that includes information for businesses, residents, and more. The site is updated as information evolves. CITY SEEKS COMMISSION MEMBERS TO REVIEW AND RECOMMEND SALARIES FOR MAYOR AND COUNCIL - The City of Tucson is accepting applications for the Citizens Commission on Public Service and Compensation, a panel that reviews and recommends appropriate salaries for the Mayor and Tucson City Council. This is a two-month appointment. Seven commission members are appointed by the City Manager and are selected from among Tucson’s diverse economic, environmental, racial, ethnic, and cultural groups. Commission members must be registered voters living within Tucson city limits. They cannot be employees of the City of Tucson, nor a parent, sibling, spouse, child, or dependent relative of an officer or employee of the City. The seven members must be appointed and in office by Jan. 15, 2021. They will meet and provide a recommendation to the City Clerk’s Office by March 15, 2021. The Commission’s salary adjustment recommendations may be placed on the November 2021 election ballot. NEW ON-DEMAND SERVICE FOR DOOR-TO-DOOR RIDES - Sun On Demand is a new transit service, launching on Sunday, Nov. 8, that provides door-to-door rides for passengers when they need it. Transit users can travel directly to any destination within one of the designated service zones, or connect to Sun Tran bus routes, for a more flexible and convenient way to get to school, work, or shopping. Riders can start making reservations on Nov. 1 by calling Sun Van Reservations at (520) 798-1000. Transit fares remain free through the end of 2020. Face masks are required on all transit vehicles. JOB OPPORTUNITY: PARKS AND RECREATION PROJECT MANAGER - The Tucson Parks and Recreation department is hiring an experienced project manager with demonstrated success in leading multiple complex construction projects. The position manages projects and coordinates experts from different fields for the duration of each project. The successful candidate will prepare forecasts of needed funds, assist in developing and implementing project budgets, and monitor expenditures of Proposition 407. The $225 million, voter-approved bond package of 2018 is dedicated to improving City of Tucson parks and amenities, including playgrounds, sports fields, pools, splash pads, and recreation centers. It also improves City of Tucson connections, such as pedestrian pathways, bicycle pathways, and pedestrian and bicycle safety. Minimum qualifications include a bachelor’s degree, at least three years of experience in managing projects, coordinating with experts from different fields, and possessing a valid and unrestricted Class D Driver License. REMINDER: VIRTUAL TOWN HALLS FOR P-CHIP - The first of two virtual public meetings for the People, Communities, and Homes Investment Plan (P-CHIP) will take place tonight, Oct. 29, beginning at 6 p.m., and the second will be held tomorrow, Oct. 30, at 11 a.m. These meetings will provide an overview of the P-CHIP plan, why it is important, and will feature a demonstration of the survey/participatory budget tool. Visit the recently launched P-CHIP website to learn more about the plan, see the timeline, and learn how you can get involved. P-CHIP creates a framework for investing in Tucson's most vulnerable populations. This plan will direct funding for homeless services, housing stability, neighborhood enhancements, and more. The plan is built on past community plans, current data, and broad public outreach. The P-CHIP identifies priorities eligible for support from Tucson's federal and local human services funds, administered by the City of Tucson’s Housing and Community Development Department.
