COVID-19 Week of Mourning |
|
Since the pandemic hit Tucson and Pima County, more than 25,000 of our friends, neighbors, and loved ones have contracted the coronavirus and more than 600 have died from COVID-19 related causes in Pima County. In many cases the heartbreak of the loss has been exacerbated by knowing a loved one had to pass alone due to isolation restrictions in place in health care institutions. Truly, 2020 has challenged the community emotionally.
October 4th through the 11th is National Week of Mourning for the impacts of COVID-19. Please join me and my staff on Sunday evening at 6pm for a brief ceremony to remember and honor those we've lost. The event will take place at Hippie Hill in Himmel Park. We'll have some music brought by TFD bagpiper Joey Crandall followed by a short reflection brought by Rabbi Scott Saulson. Small American flags will be planted, one commemorating each person who has lost their life in Pima County since COVID-19 struck. Following the ceremony people are invited to place a photo of a loved one at the base of one of the flags to honor their passing.
Please respect the reason for this event by wearing a mask and maintaining a safe social distance from others outside of your group. The memorial will remain in place throughout the week in order to allow people to stop by individually to honor those who we've lost.
