REID PARK ZOO REOPENS TOMORROW - After a five-month closure due to the coronavirus, Reid Park Zoo will reopen to the public tomorrow, Aug. 28, for “Wildlife Walks,” a modified viewing experience with enhanced health and safety measures for guests, staff, and the animals. The Zoo will be open daily for special summer viewing hours, 8 a.m.-2 p.m., through Sept. 30, and tickets must be purchased online. With a limit on the number of guests allowed in the Zoo at one time, tickets sold out fast. The first tickets available for purchase are for Sept. 1, but that could change quickly. ICYMI: WATCH THRIVE IN THE 05’S RESOURCE CAFÉ FEATURING THE CITY OF TUCSON’S MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT TEAM (VIDEO) - A recent Thrive in the 05 Resource Café featured the Tucson Police Department’s (TPD) Mental Health Support Team (MHST). During the café, from May 19, TPD Sgt. Dan Bustamante discussed mental health and resources for supporting people struggling with mental health challenges during COVID-19. The Thrive Resource Café is a half-hour livestream taking place every Tuesday through Thursday on Facebook and Zoom. Thrive in the 05 is a collaboration of Innovations in Community-Based Crime Reduction, Choice Neighborhoods, and Workforce & Economic Development in the 85705 ZIP code. The purpose of the Thrive Resource Cafés is to highlight various community partners and resources available to the public during the COVID-19 pandemic. ARIZONA TOPS 200,000 COVID-19 CASES - As of today, Aug. 27, Arizona now has 200,139 positive coronavirus cases, with 680 new cases reported today (up from 187 yesterday). The total number of cases includes people who have recovered. Of that number, 21,101 cases are in Pima County (up 90 from yesterday). There have been 4,929 COVID-19 deaths in Arizona (33 reported today), and 567 of those occurred in Pima County (4 reported today). Meanwhile, the City of Tucson maintains an up-to-date COVID-19 website (link below) that includes information for businesses, residents, and even activities for kids. GRANT FUNDING HELPS CREATE NEW OUTDOOR DINING - New outdoor cafés and seating areas are beginning to appear in Downtown Tucson, thanks to a grant program between the Downtown Tucson Partnership (DTP) and Pima County. The new Outdoor Café Grant Program provides up to $5,000 to expand or enhance outdoor cafés. This program is designed to offset costs associated with higher-quality barriers, furnishings, and amenities for outdoor seating areas. The DTP has received 19 outdoor café applications totaling a little more than $99,000. The City of Tucson recently enacted temporary regulations making it possible for food and beverage establishments to expand their seating areas in walkways, parking lots, and other spaces while continuing to meet accessibility, safety, and social distancing requirements.
