Our Journey Has Begun

D3 staff

From left to right: Joshua Laughlin and Bonnie Bazata (Senior Aides), Supervisor Jennifer Allen, Claudia Bungard (Office Manager) and CJ Boyd (Chief of Staff). Nice morning at Sweetwater Wetlands Park, a District 3 paradise!

Welcome to the first issue of the District 3 monthly newsletter! We've been learning the ins and outs of Pima County and already taking action, helping constituents and moving community-driven policy forward.

Our team is now fully in place, and everyone has hit the ground running. Since our first week in office, we've been actively addressing constituent concerns across a wide range of issues, including roads, housing, public safety, and solutions to homelessness. We take every issue seriously, dedicating time for thorough investigation and follow-up.

Don't hesitate to reach out — we’re here to help!

Greetings from Supervisor Allen

Jen Allen

Dear constituents and friends,

With two months in office under my belt, I am so impressed by the complexity of the issues, concerns, and challenges facing District 3 and Pima County. With all the upheaval and uncertainty at the federal level, I hear and feel communities' anxiety, fear, and outrage. As I dig into my new role, my goal continues to be to figure out ways to protect the lands and people who call southern Arizona home and ensure that everyone is treated with dignity and has opportunities to prosper.

To get started, I've focused on building a strong foundational understanding of Pima County. I’ve participated in five Board of Supervisors meetings where I've been learning the ropes. With my staff, we've met with eighteen County departments to learn about their scope of work and priorities. We toured the Tres Rios Water Reclamation Center, the Pima County Adult Detention Center, and the Pima Animal Care Center where almost 500 dogs are waiting for their forever home (my family has just adopted one: Ribsy, my new best friend!).

One of my favorite parts of this role is being in District 3 communities. In the last two months, we've been in Arivaca, Ajo, Marana, Three Points, Altar Valley, Sells, Flowing Wells, and Sasabe.

In January I visited the Marana Rescue Me Shelter with other local elected officials to draw attention to the need for more pet adoptions. In February, I met with a delegation of Japanese business owners thinking of partnering with Pima County. I was honored to speak at the 70th anniversary celebration of the Southern Arizona Regional Science and Engineering Fair.

I’ve also been meeting with community organizations that are uniting to protect our most vulnerable residents, including immigrant families and the parents of transgender youth.

We are just getting started – so much good work ahead of us. Our calendars are packed with meetings and events across District 3 so we look forward to seeing and hearing from you in the days ahead.

Community Spotlight

The HUB

On Saturday, January 11th, we attended the soft opening for The HUB in Three Points. The HUB houses a community food bank, a thrift store, and a coffee bar, and it serves as a space for the community to access resources and come together. Congratulations to Trish, Sandy, and the rest of the Friends of Robles Ranch on this accomplishment, and thank you for the invitation!

_______________

Around District 3

Here’s a quick overview of what we've been up to all across District 3.

A Special Parade

Rodeo parade

Supervisor Allen celebrated the 86th annual Tohono O’odham Rodeo in Sells on February 1st. She rode on the Chairman Verlon M. Jose's float along with other dignitaries in the parade. She also visited with community members at the rodeo grounds, watched some Toca matches, and enjoyed delicious food along with hundreds of people enjoying the Rodeo.

We Love Reading!

love or reading event

During Love of Reading Week, Supervisor Allen shared her passion for reading with students at two District 3 schools. She read Meet the Dullards and The Wump World to third and fourth graders at Douglas Elementary and Laguna Elementary schools. By encouraging children to explore new worlds through reading, we’re helping to build a brighter future for them and our community.

Meeting in Ajo

Western Pima Community Council

On February 24th we went to Ajo for the monthly Western Pima County Community Council (WPCCC) meeting. Supervisor Allen shared updates on the county budgetary process and Pima Prospers, and we heard presentations from the local ham radio club as well as organizers of the upcoming Love Works festival. See flyer below.

Heart of Arivaca

Arivaca Folks

On February 22nd, we traveled to the Southern edge of District 3 to meet with the good folks at Arivaca HR. They provide daily meals for roughly 70 Arivaca locals as well as additional services such as home energy assistance programs, rides to doctor's appointments, home repairs, job training, and managing the Village Thrift Shoppe. Thanks Suzanne, Rick, Judy, and Allyson for all of your hard work!

¡Sí se puede!

Cesar Chavez proclamation

The Pima County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed March 2025 as César Chávez and Dolores Huerta Month. We encourage everyone in our community to observe this month and celebrate the lasting legacies of two of our nation’s foremost civil rights and labor leaders.

Adopt or Foster a Pet!

Oakley the dog

District 3 is joining Pima County Animal Center's ongoing pet adoption campaign. Each issue will feature a pet in need of a home. Please consider adopting!

Meet Oakley!

This guy is 100 lbs of lovable Lab energy, with all the classic Lab traits: a happy personality, passion for fetch, and never-ending appetite! According to his former family, Oakley is housetrained and affectionate. Volunteers described him as calm and contented. He also knows several tricks and loves toys. Oakley has been in the shelter since August 2024 and would love to find his family.

Fee: Oakley is free to adopt. He is neutered, up-to-date on vaccines, and microchipped.
