Hello District 1!
July is a time to celebrate the freedoms we cherish, the communities we call home, and the shared values that bring us together. As we mark Independence Day with family, friends, and neighbors, we also begin commemorating our nation's 250th anniversary, a historic milestone honoring the enduring ideals of liberty, service, and civic responsibility. It is an opportunity to reflect on our history, celebrate the progress we have made, and renew our commitment to building a strong future.
This month, we're sharing updates on projects, partnerships, and initiatives that continue to strengthen District 1 and the City of Mesa. From neighborhood improvements and community events to public safety efforts and city services, these updates highlight the many ways we're working together to keep Mesa a great place to live, work, and raise a family.
I'm also pleased to share that Mesa has once again earned national recognition for responsible governance and fiscal stewardship. In this edition, you'll learn more about Mesa's recent recognition as one of the best run cities in America and how our commitment to responsible financial management continues to benefit our community.

Mesa Ranked as One of Best Run Cities in America
Mesa has once again earned national recognition for its commitment to responsible governance and fiscal stewardship. According to a recent WalletHub study, Mesa ranked No. 10 among the best run cities in the United States and was recognized as the highest-ranked city in Arizona.
The study evaluated 148 of the nation's largest cities by comparing the quality of services they provide with the amount they spend. Cities were assessed in six key areas: financial stability, education, health, safety, economy, and infrastructure.
Mesa's strong ranking reflects our commitment to responsible financial management, efficient city services, and strategic investments that benefit residents and businesses alike. The report also recognized Mesa's growing economy, increasing household incomes, strong public safety, and sound financial practices as key factors contributing to this achievement.
This recognition belongs to the dedicated City employees who work every day to serve our community and to the residents who make Mesa such a special place to live, work, and raise a family. Primary Election Information
Mesa holds regularly scheduled elections in even-numbered years in conjunction with Maricopa County elections conducted in July and November. The Mayor is elected at-large and Councilmembers are elected from six (6) geographic districts. Mesa will hold a Primary Election on July 21, 2026 for the purpose of electing a Councilmember in Districts 4, 5, and 6.
Key Primary Election Dates:
- July 10: Deadline to request a replacement ballot by mail
- July 14: Last recommended day to mail back primary election ballot
- July 17: Last day for early in-person voting
- July 21: Primary Election Day

Celebrate Independence Day at the Willmeng Arizona Celebration of Freedom!
Join us on Saturday, July 4, from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Mesa Convention Center and Mesa Amphitheatre for the 17th Annual Willmeng Arizona Celebration of Freedom. This free, family-friendly event features live music, patriotic programs, a spectacular drone show, professional wrestling, the popular Patriotic Superhero Stunt Show, military displays, and a fireworks finale at 9:30 p.m.
With both indoor and outdoor activities, there's something for everyone to enjoy while celebrating our nation's independence and the America 250 commemoration. We hope to see you there for an unforgettable evening of family fun and patriotism!

Monsoon Season Is Here – Be Prepared
Monsoon season officially runs from June 15 through September 30. During this time, Mesa residents may experience severe weather conditions, including lightning, damaging winds, dust storms, flash flooding, and extreme heat.
Now is the perfect time to make sure you and your family are prepared. Check that your windshield wipers and tires are in good condition, test your flashlights, and ensure backup batteries and power banks are fully charged before a storm arrives.
It's also a good idea to keep important emergency phone numbers readily available should you need assistance during a storm event.

Celebrating the Busy Bees Ribbon Cutting
I was honored to join the Busy Bees team, community members, and the Mesa Chamber of Commerce in celebrating the grand opening and ribbon cutting of Busy Bees in Mesa.
Ribbon cuttings are more than just celebrations. They represent new opportunities for families, job creation, and continued investment in our community. Access to high quality early childhood education and care is essential to supporting working families and helping our youngest learners build a strong foundation for the future. It was wonderful to see so many people come together to welcome Busy Bees and recognize the positive impact they will have on children, families, and our community.
Congratulations to the entire Busy Bees team on this exciting milestone! We appreciate your investment in Mesa and wish you continued success as you begin serving families throughout our community.
Lehi Auditorium Earns State Preservation Honor
Congratulations to the Lehi community on receiving a 2026 Governor's Heritage Preservation Honor Award for the rehabilitation of the historic Lehi Auditorium. Presented by the Arizona State Historic Preservation Office and the Arizona Preservation Foundation, the award recognizes outstanding efforts to preserve Arizona's historic and cultural landmarks.
A special congratulations to Susan Ricci, whose dedication and leadership played a vital role in preserving this treasured community landmark. Thanks to the efforts of Susan and many committed volunteers and partners, the restored Lehi Auditorium continues to celebrate Mesa's rich history while serving as the home of the Arizona Baseball Museum and a gathering place for future generations.
This well deserved recognition reflects the pride, perseverance, and community spirit that make Lehi such a special part of District 1

Touring the Northwest Water Reclamation Plant
I recently had the opportunity to tour Mesa's Northwest Water Reclamation Plant and gain a firsthand look at the essential work taking place behind the scenes to protect public health, conserve our water resources, and support our community.
Every day, the plant receives and treats millions of gallons of wastewater from homes and businesses throughout Mesa. Through advanced treatment processes, the dedicated staff transforms wastewater into high quality reclaimed water that can be safely reused for irrigation, power generation, groundwater recharge, and other beneficial purposes. This important work helps protect our environment, conserve precious water resources, and support the long term sustainability of our community.
Tours like this provide valuable insight into the infrastructure and dedicated professionals who keep Mesa running every day. Seeing these operations firsthand helps me make informed decisions as we continue investing in the essential services our community depends on.
As Arizona continues to focus on water security, facilities like the Northwest Water Reclamation Plant play a critical role in ensuring a reliable and sustainable water future. I am grateful to the dedicated professionals who operate and maintain this essential infrastructure with expertise and care every day.

Stay Safe: Energy Safety During Monsoon Season
Monsoon storms can damage electric and natural gas equipment, causing power outages and gas emergencies.
Here are some tips on how to “weather” the storm:
Before the Storm
- Review energy safety practices for your home and neighborhood.
- Keep these emergency numbers easy to find:

During the Storm
- Natural gas appliances are generally safe to use unless you smell gas or hear a hissing sound from an appliance or meter. If you think there is a gas leak, leave the area right away and report it.
- Check for current power outages at: https://wov.mesaaz.gov/.
After the Storm
- If your home or yard is damaged, have a qualified professional inspect your gas pipes and appliances.
- If you think there is a gas leak, leave the area right away and report it.
- Stay away from downed or low-hanging power lines.
- Report power outages and damaged electrical equipment.
- Call 8-1-1 at least two days before digging to make repairs. It’s free, and it’s the law.
Stay Alert
Power outages and storm damage can last longer than the storm itself. Stay safe and be aware of hazards until repairs are complete.

July 7 – MABEL at Main 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. • Main Library, 64 E. First St. Join Mesa Arts Center’s Mobile Arts Based Engagement Lab for hands-on activities exploring dinosaurs and the stories of the prehistoric past.
July 7 – Safari Day at Kino Aquatic Center 2 to 4 p.m. • Kino Aquatic Center, 848 N. Horne Enjoy safari-themed pool games, activities, prizes and water-safety fun. Activities are included with regular public swim admission.

July 18 – America on Screen: 1776 2 to 4:30 p.m. • Main Library, 64 E. First St. Celebrate America 250 with a free screening of the musical film 1776, which tells the story of the debate surrounding American independence.
July 21 – Primary Election Day
July 22 – Marketing with Canva for Non-Marketers Workshop 5 to 7 p.m. • Mesa Business Builder @ The Studios, 59 E. First St. Learn how to use your phone and Canva to create professional marketing content for your business. This hands-on workshop covers brand photography, identifying your ideal customer and creating social media posts, reels, stories and graphics.
July 28 – Video Production Training 5 to 6 p.m. • Mesa Business Builder @ The Studios, 59 E. First St. Learn about the video equipment available at Mesa Business Builder and how to use it to complement a podcast or grow your brand. This free, hands-on training includes equipment setup, recording, sound and a question-and-answer session.
