Dear District 5 Neighbors,
Summer is in full swing in Mesa, and while the temperatures are climbing, there's still plenty to look forward to across our community. Whether you're finding ways to stay cool, spending time with family, or taking advantage of the many amenities our city has to offer, I hope you're enjoying all that makes Mesa such a wonderful place to call home and will take the opportunity to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary this July 4th.
I'm especially proud to share that Mesa was recently ranked the #10 Best-Run City in America by WalletHub and the #1 Best Run City in Arizona. This recognition reflects the hard work of our dedicated City employees, the thoughtful stewardship of taxpayer dollars, and our commitment to delivering high-quality services while planning responsibly for the future. It's an achievement we can all be proud of and one that speaks to the strength of our community.
As we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary this July 4th, it is a great time to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy in this country and the importance of civic engagement. The City of Mesa and the State of Arizona have elections coming up on July 21, and I encourage every eligible voter to make a plan to participate. Local elections have a direct impact on our neighborhoods, parks, public safety, and the quality of life we enjoy every day.
With monsoon season underway, now is the perfect time to prepare for Arizona's summer storms. While monsoons can bring much-needed rain, they can also produce strong winds, blowing dust, lightning, and localized flooding with little warning. I encourage everyone to secure outdoor furniture, trim trees and shrubs, clean out nearby storm drains, and stay informed by monitoring local weather forecasts and signing up for emergency alerts. A little preparation today can make all the difference in helping keep you, your family, and our community safe throughout the season.
While school may still be on summer break, it's already time to start thinking ahead. Registration for our popular fall Mesa Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities programs is just around the corner. From youth sports and fitness classes to arts, enrichment, and activities for all ages, these programs offer something for everyone and fill up quickly, so be sure to watch for registration dates.
Thank you for allowing me to serve as your District 5 Councilmember. It is an honor to represent our community, and I remain committed to protecting taxpayer dollars, supporting public safety, maintaining our infrastructure, and preserving the exceptional quality of life that makes Mesa such a great place to live, work, and raise a family.

 Mesa Named Best-Run City in Arizona, #10 in the U.S.
The City of Mesa has been ranked among the 10 best run cities in the United States and the highest-ranked city in Arizona, according to a new study by WalletHub. Mesa placed number 10 overall.
WalletHub evaluated 148 of the nation's largest cities by comparing the quality of services they provide to residents with the amount they spend. The study measured six key areas: financial stability, education, health, safety, economy and infrastructure.
"Mesa earned its spot as the 10th best-run city in America by making the most of its resources and delivering good value to its taxpayers. A strong credit rating and relatively low long-term debt help support its financial stability, allowing Mesa to provide services efficiently without relying on excessive spending," said WalletHub Analyst Chip Lupo.
Primary Election Information
Mesa holds regularly scheduled elections in even-numbered years in conjunction with Maricopa County elections conducted in July and November. The Mayor is elected at-large and Councilmembers are elected from six (6) geographic districts. Mesa will hold a Primary Election on July 21, 2026 for the purpose of electing a Councilmember in Districts 4, 5, and 6.
Key Primary Election Dates:
- July 10: Deadline to request a replacement ballot by mail
- July 14: Last recommended day to mail back primary election ballot
- July 17: Last day for early in-person voting
- July 21: Primary Election Day
Stay Safe: Energy Safety During Monsoon Season
Monsoon storms can damage electric and natural gas equipment, causing power outages and gas emergencies.
Here are some tips on how to “weather” the storm:
Before the Storm
- Review energy safety practices for your home and neighborhood.
- Keep these emergency numbers easy to find:

During the Storm
- Natural gas appliances are generally safe to use unless you smell gas or hear a hissing sound from an appliance or meter. If you think there is a gas leak, leave the area right away and report it.
- Check for current power outages at: https://wov.mesaaz.gov/.
After the Storm
- If your home or yard is damaged, have a qualified professional inspect your gas pipes and appliances.
- If you think there is a gas leak, leave the area right away and report it.
- Stay away from downed or low-hanging power lines.
- Report power outages and damaged electrical equipment.
- Call 8-1-1 at least two days before digging to make repairs. It’s free, and it’s the law.
Stay Alert
Power outages and storm damage can last longer than the storm itself. Stay safe and be aware of hazards until repairs are complete.
Get Ready for Fall with Mesa Parks
Looking for a new activity, sport or class for your family this fall? Mesa Parks and Recreation offers programs for nearly every age and interest, including swim lessons, tennis, dance, martial arts, STEM activities and adaptive recreation. Mesa residents can register beginning at 8 a.m. July 6, while registration opens for nonresidents at 8 a.m. July 13.
Activities are offered at recreation centers, athletic fields, aquatic facilities and parks throughout the city. Review the Fall 2026 PLAYBOOK and make sure your online account is ready before registration begins.
 Fireworks Restrictions in Effect in Northeast Mesa
Due to the increased wildfire danger and the implementation of Stage 1 Fire Restrictions by the State of Arizona, the use of consumer fireworks is currently PROHIBITED within one mile of the Tonto National Forest. This applies to residents of several District 5 communities including Las Sendas and Red Mountain Ranch.

Hydration Donation Campaign
The City's Hydration Donation Campaign runs from May 4 through September 30, 2026 to provide supplies of water to people in need. We work with nonprofit agencies to collect the bottles of water which are distributed through United Food bank to numerous agencies in the valley, including A New Leaf, Paz de Cristo, and Mesa United Way.
The Campaign is a life saver for the less fortunate during the hot summer months. Since the campaign began in 2007, more than 7.6 million bottles of water have been donated. $5 or less buys a case of water.

Mayor Freeman and I attended “Swim Across America,” a swim event and fundraiser with Olympians and athletes helping to raise funds for cancer research at the Mayo Clinic at Skyline High School.

Make a splash on The Blob, a giant inflatable that launches swimmers into the pool. Participation costs $2 in addition to regular public swim admission, and space is limited to 25 swimmers per session.
July 4 – Arizona Celebration of Freedom
