February 2025
Hello!
I’m pleased to share some important updates with you in my February community newsletter. First, I’m honored to announce that I’ve been appointed as Chair of the City’s Audit, Finance & Enterprise Committee. In this role, I’ll work closely with our city departments to keep Mesa’s finances transparent, efficient and aligned with our shared goals. As someone who chose Mesa for its beautiful views, safe neighborhoods and excellent city services, I’m committed to making sure our community continues to thrive.
This month, I also want to address the new utility rate adjustments, which take effect on February 1. These changes came after careful study and extensive public input. The decision reflects our core financial principle of preventing drastic increases through small, measured adjustments over time. Mesa’s unique business model does not rely on a primary property tax, so revenue from utilities plays a key part in funding public safety, roads and other essential services. With inflation and a growing population placing pressure on our infrastructure, these modest increases will help us maintain high-quality services and invest in vital projects that benefit us all.
I understand that household budgets are stretched thin, and my colleagues and I took this decision very seriously. Our goal is to balance the needs of a growing city with affordability for the families and businesses that make our city strong and vibrant. Every dollar from these changes will support important programs that keep our neighborhoods safe, our supply of surface water secure and our city prepared for the future. If you have questions or want more details, please visit the Office of Management & Budget website or reach out to my office. Thank you for your partnership in keeping Mesa a wonderful place to live, work and play!
Warm Regards,
Councilmember Alicia Goforth

Water Main Inspection and Rehabilitation
The City of Mesa is taking proactive steps to inspect and rehabilitate large water transmission mains in Northeast Mesa. These essential pipelines, ranging from 30 to 36 inches in diameter, help deliver water throughout the city and require maintenance to ensure long-term reliability.
To minimize disruptions, crews will use robotic inspection equipment and targeted excavations instead of digging up large sections of road. However, temporary traffic control measures will be in place in key areas, including Val Vista Drive, Greenfield Road, Higley Road, Recker Road, McDowell Road, and McKellips Road. Work is scheduled to last until May 2025, with pavement restoration following the inspections.
This critical work can only be done every 10-12 years during the cooler months when water demand is lower. We appreciate your patience as we complete these upgrades to strengthen Mesa’s water infrastructure.
For more information, contact the City of Mesa Engineering Department at (480) 644-3800 or engineering.info@mesaaz.gov.

Joey Goes to Arizona Reading
I had a great time with grade 3-6 students of Mendoza Elementary reading Joey Goes to Arizona with author and owner of Cup of Joey, Steve Collins. We learned all about Australian lingo, Arizona's native plants and animals and donated a few copies to the school library. It was a "ripper" time!
