September is National Preparedness Month
Emergencies can happen anytime and anywhere, so staying ready is crucial. Here are some tips for handling utility emergencies like electric and natural gas.
Electric Emergency: If you encounter a downed power line, stay away from it and do not touch anything in contact with it. If a power line falls on your vehicle, remain inside and call 911 to report it. Then, contact your electric service provider:
- City of Mesa Electric: 480-644-2262
- SRP: 602-236-8811
Natural Gas Emergency: Use your senses to detect a gas leak. If you smell a rotten egg odor, hear an unusual sound coming from a pipeline or appliance or see dirt blowing in the air or bubbles forming in the standing water, leave the area immediately and call 911 to report it. Then contact your natural gas service provider:
- City of Mesa: 480-644-4277
- Southwest Gas: 877-860-6020

Take Advantage of Water-Saving Fall Planting Resources
Usher in fall with a refreshed landscape! Fall is one of the best times to plant because soil temperatures are still warm and give plants plenty of time to get established before next summer’s heat.
If you’re unsure what to plant, we can help. A refreshed and updated version of one of our most popular books, Landscape Plants for the Arizona Desert, is now available. The book features more than 200 plants and is designed to be a user-friendly resource guide for residents. This publication is your key to saving water and money by incorporating desert-appropriate, drought-tolerant plants into your yards.
Find a location near you to pick up a copy or access the digital version.Â
Fall is also a good time to plan a grass-to-Xeriscape conversion. If you are ready to remove your water-thirsty grass and replace it with desert-adapted plants, we have incentives for Mesa water customers of up to $1,100 on a future project. Learn more and find out if you qualify.
If you do have grass, Mesa is encouraging residents, businesses and HOAs to forgo the overseeding this winter to maximize their water savings – as much as 8,000 gallons saved for every 1,000 sq. ft. of grass that isn’t overseeded. Plus, you’ll save time, money and give your bermudagrass a much-needed break. Need more reasons? Here are 10 Reasons to Skip the Winter Lawn.Â
