National 811 Day
Celebrate National 811 Day with us! August 11 was dedicated to raising awareness about safe digging. Remember to contact Arizona 811 at least two full working days before starting any digging project. This ensures underground utility lines are located and marked, preventing injuries, property damage and service outages.
After calling 811, wait for responses from all facilities on your ticket before digging. Hand-dig within two feet of marked lines, support exposed facilities and keep locate marks visible and valid (15 days) throughout your project.
Safety is everyone's responsibility. Contacting Arizona 811 is easy, free, and required by law.

No Bags in the Blue
Did you know that placing your recycling in a plastic bag hurts the recycling system? When bagged recyclables get to a sorting facility (or Materials Recovery Facility), they are pulled from the processing line and thrown in the trash.
The high volume of recyclable materials processed by recycling centers makes it impractical to open individual bags. All those containers you diligently rinsed and emptied never make it through the sorting process nor are they made into new products when they are bagged.
Do your part to make Mesa’s recycling program successful - always keep recyclables loose and unbagged. For more information about Mesa’s recycling, including common examples of contamination, please visit mesarecycles.org.

Harvest the Rain and Water Your Plants for Free
Arizona’s monsoon season lasts through September 30 so there is still an opportunity to take advantage of this free water source (as long as Mother Nature cooperates and delivers us some much-needed rain).
Harvesting rainwater can be simple – add swales or berms to your landscape to channel the water to your plants – or more complex, such as using a gutter to capture water from the roof and direct it into a rain barrel. The rooftop of an average home can collect 500 gallons of water from just a half inch of rain.
Rainwater harvesting has many benefits – it helps to replenish groundwater, and the beneficial minerals in the rain can boost plant growth. By keeping the water on your property, you will keep fertilizers, weed spray and other pollutants out of the storm drain. A bonus of the rain: if you get a half inch of rain, you can skip a landscape watering cycle.
