Earth Day 2021

Celebrate Nature: In this month's tip, we've listed 10 simple actions to make a positive impact on the planet.

Earth Day: April 22 is a day to celebrate our planet and to learn ways to actively take care of our community and the environment. Learn more on our Earth Day page along with 50+ easy and locally relevant tips on topics like Mesa’s composting program, seed library, incentives for grass removal, great water-saving ideas, and activities for kids.

Arbor DayApril 26 is a holiday just for trees! Plant a tree, do something nice for your existing trees, or learn more about proper tree care to keep your trees healthy and beautiful. Arbor Day is especially significant due to our “Trees Are Cool” Initiative, with a goal of planting 1,000,000 trees in the City by 2050. Our Arbor Day site has everything you need. If you plant a tree, be sure to register it on our Trees Are Cool page.

Join us at the LIVING GREEN VILLAGE at Celebrate Mesa!

April 13, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Celebrate Mesa and Mother Earth at Pioneer Park, 526 E. Main St. This free family event brings the community together to enjoy games, carnival rides, and great entertainment. Be sure to look for our special group of exhibitors in the Living Green Village north of the playground. We've got 20 exhibitors joining us with fun and educational activities about gardening, trees, recycling, energy and water conservation, and more. Here are some highlights:

  • Mesa Urban Garden will be talking composting & vermicomposting with worms.
  • Our Earth Day Booth will share simple ways to make a difference.
  • Visit with nature-inspired characters like our Earth Day Fairy.
  • Ask an Arborist, Tree Hugging Booth, tree planting, and more.

Summer Gardening in Arizona

April 11, 6 to 7 p.m. It is possible to have a productive vegetable garden during the summer heat. Learn the fundamentals to focus on for success during Arizona's hot, dry summer months. Presented by expert gardener and book author, Angela Judd. Mesa Main Library. Learn more


Bike to Work Day and Green Expo

April 17, 7 to 9 a.m. at The Plaza at Mesa City Center. Join the City of Mesa's Bicycle and Pedestrian Program for Mesa Bike to Work Day 2024. The annual event encourages commuters to bike to work (or wherever they need to go), helping save money, improve health and lower stress levels — all while reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality. Learn more.

April 19 & 20: Earth Day Promo - Our Household Hazardous Materials Facility is offering a special promotion for those who are dropping off accepted hazardous items at the facility. Complimentary spray bottles with a selection of recipes to make your own natural cleaners will be handed out while supplies last. It’s a way to help consumers make the switch from traditional (not always good for the environment) household cleaners to natural-based alternatives.

Arizona Forward’s 42nd Annual Environmental Excellence Awards Celebrates Sustainability in Arizona

The Post

More than 500 business leaders, elected officials, and their guests gathered on March 23rd, 2024 in anticipation to hear who the recipients would be for this year’s prestigious Arizona Forward Environmental Excellence Awards presented by SRP. THE POST, a Mesa Historic Post Office Rehabilitation and Adaptive Reuse Project won in the category of Historic Preservation. This year, Arizona Forward also presented awards to five mayors who have demonstrated unparalleled dedication and leadership in championing robust climate action plans for their cities and, by extension, the entire state of Arizona. The mayors recognized include City of Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, City of Tucson Mayor Regina Romero, City of Flagstaff Mayor Becky Daggett, City of Tempe Mayor Corey Woods, and City of Mesa Mayor John Giles.

We have an idea for Water Awareness Month. Check out our interactive Know-Your-H2O Water Calculator to see how much water your household should be using (get the kids to help). The result? You could save water & money on your water bill. Once completed, you can order a free water conservation kit which includes a showerhead, aerators, shower timer, and more. Green Yard Waste Program Can be used for grass, leaves, plant trimmings, and tree branches. Materials are turned into compost and mulch.

Household Hazardous Materials Our facility accepts appliances, electronics, cooking oil, paint, auto fluids, and many other items. There's also a swap shop.

MedReturn Boxes Unwanted prescription medications, vitamins, over-the-counter medications, etc. can be dropped in these boxes at specific Mesa police stations.

Bookmans Mesa Books, magazines, music, movies, musical instruments and even household items can be exchanged or sold.

Stardust Mesa This reuse center for home improvement is a great place to donate leftover building supplies or those old (but usable) cabinets you're replacing.

Goodwill Donate clothing and household items to some of the many nonprofits that are also providing resources to our community.


Public Service Announcement for Water Awareness Month

The message below was submitted by students from Mountain View High School in Mesa as part of their AP English Language and Composition class. During their project, they realized the importance and urgency of addressing drought in the southwest. Here is what they said. "We hope to inspire the city, its schools and other community members to conserve water for the future generations who will live here."
