Put Your Lawn on a Water Diet
If you’re watering your lawn every day, you’re watering too much! An established lawn only needs to be watered once every 3 days in the hottest part of summer, and less when we get into the fall months.
Based on science from the University of Arizona, it is healthier for grass if you apply 3/4" of water each time you irrigate to wet the root zone to a depth of about 8 inches. This encourages roots to go deeper into the soil where they are better protected from hot, dry winds. How do you know if you're applying 3/4" of water? We thought you'd never ask! See pages 7 and 8 of our lawn watering guide. Once you've found your run time for your specific system, you only need to change your frequency of watering seasonally.
Act Now! Free Water is Coming (from Monsoon Rains)
The monsoon season officially starts on June 15, but summer storms often don’t move in until July. This means you still have time to set up your rainwater harvesting system. Monsoon rain has many benefits – most importantly, the water is free. The rooftop of an average home can collect 500 gallons of water from a half-inch of rain. And not only does rain contain beneficial minerals that can boost plant growth, it also helps to replenish the groundwater. This happens by diverting run-off from concrete and asphalt and allowing it to seep back into the ground. Finally, rain helps to dilute naturally occurring salt build-up in the soil and keeps fertilizers, weed spray and other pollutants from ending up in the storm drain. Secure Your Load
If you're driving in Arizona, you should know how to secure your load properly. It's not only a safety issue, but also a legal one. You don't want to cause a crash or get fined because of something that fell off your vehicle, right? Here are some simple tips to follow:
- Use strong straps, ropes, cords or nets to tie down large or heavy items. Make sure they can handle the wind speed on the highway.
- Cover loose items like tree branches or trash with a tarp or netting. Tie it down securely so it doesn't fly away.
- Put lighter items at the bottom of the load and distribute them evenly. Don't overload your vehicle or trailer.
- Check your load before you start driving and recheck it along the way. Make sure nothing is loose or shifting.
By following these tips, you can help keep Arizona's roads safe and clean.Â
