Balloon Blackouts
Mylar Balloons and Power Lines Don’t Mix
With all the graduation parties and other celebrations occurring, it’s a great time to remind everyone of the danger of mixing Mylar balloons and power lines.
Mylar balloons are metallic and when they touch a power line, it can cause a dangerous short circuit leading to a power outage, fire and serious injuries.
For your safety and the safety of others:
- Never release balloons outside
- Keep balloons away from power lines
- Don’t touch balloons entangled in wires
- Always tie balloons to a weight
- Puncture, deflate, and dispose of balloons properly
If you see a balloon caught in a power line or a downed line, call 480-644-2262 or 911. Never attempt to retrieve anything entangled in power lines.

Did you know you might own a natural gas line?
Piping from the meter to every gas appliance, indoors and out, belongs to the property owner and is the owner’s responsibility to maintain, much like plumbing and electrical systems. This piping should periodically be checked for signs of leaks, corrosion and rust. Contact a licensed professional for assistance if you discover an unsafe condition to your piping and need repairs.
Remember, if you are planning a digging project, call Arizona811 before digging to have your underground utilities located and marked, and be sure to hand dig when working near any buried piping.

Don’t Let Your Toilet Cost You Money!
You’ve seen the water ripple in the bowl, you’ve heard your toilet refill when no one flushed and you’ve jiggled the handle to get the water to stop running. Even a small toilet leak can waste 10,000 gallons of water a year. To ensure that you’re not flushing your hard-earned money (and wasted water) down the drain, it’s a good idea to periodically check your toilets for leaks. Here’s an easy method:
- Remove the tank lid.
- Add a few drops of food coloring to the tank.
- Wait 10-15 minutes and do not flush the toilet. If dye seeps into your toilet bowl, you have a leak.
The cause is often a leaky flapper. Watch our DIY plumbing video for easy instructions on how to replace it.

Central Mesa Reuse Pipeline Project
Last month, Mesa officials and residents gathered to kick off the start of the Central Mesa Reuse Pipeline project. The 10.5-mile pipeline will deliver reclaimed water treated at the Northwest Water Reclamation Plant to the Gila River Indian Community in exchange for Colorado River water supplies as part of an existing exchange agreement.
The project will add essential infrastructure to help maximize our diverse water portfolio. Mesa will gain an additional 12,000 acre-feet of water annually, and construction is expected to run through the Spring of 2025. See project information web page for location map and additional details.
