Help Prevent Garbage Truck Fires
There has been a recent rise in garbage truck fires due to hazardous materials being placed in trash and recycle containers. Items such as batteries, fireworks, pool chemicals, propane tanks and paint materials can combust and ignite when compacted with other materials in a garbage truck. Even containers that appear to be empty can create a safety hazard.
Keep our staff and community safe by not placing these types of items in your trash or recycle containers. Mesa residents can bring many types of hazardous materials, at no additional cost, to our Household Hazardous Materials Facility for recycling and proper disposal. Mesa businesses should contact a private hazardous waste disposal company for available options.
It's BBQ season. Placing hot coals in your trash container should also be avoided to prevent fire hazards. Be safe and make sure coals are fully extinguished before discarding.

Removing Grass and Planting Shade (Trees) Saves Money and More!
Did you know that grass landscapes use twice as much water as desert landscaping? Converting grass into an attractive low-water-using landscape is one of the best ways to conserve water and energy, save money on your water bill and reduce maintenance. June through September is the best time to remove bermudagrass. The City of Mesa offers a Grass-to-Xeriscape Landscape Incentive to our residential water customers. By removing at least 500 square feet or more of established and living grass and replacing it with low-water-use plants, you may qualify to receive $500. Take advantage of our ‘Trees Are Cool’ bonus and get an extra $50 when you add one tree and $75 when you include two as part of your new landscape. There are landscape and irrigation incentive opportunities for non-residential customers, too. Check out our grass-to-Xeriscape page for more information Please note: Completed projects are not eligible to apply.

Natural Gas Pipelines in your Community
Line markers are used to identify the presence of a natural gas pipeline in the area. A natural gas pipeline marker will display three things:
- Name of pipeline operator
- Material being transported
- Emergency contact information
Gas pipelines may be buried in an area that you would not expect. Because of this, it is essential to understand and recognize the signs of a natural gas leak.
- Smell: Rotten egg odor
- Hear: Unusual blowing or hissing sound coming from a pipeline
- See: Unusual changes to the soil, dead or dying vegetation, dirt or debris blowing in the air, standing water bubbling
If you suspect a natural gas leak, evacuate the area immediately! Get to a safe location and call 480-644-4277 or 911.

Blue Barrel Recycling Program Update
A recent update was provided to City Council on Mesa’s Blue Barrel Recycling Program. Video update available at MesaRecycles.org.
The best way to manage our growing waste stream is to first reduce the amount of trash we generate, then reuse what we already have and, finally, recycle right. Not sure if something is accepted in Mesa’s blue barrel? Use the Recycle Right Wizard. Simply type in the name of the item and the wizard will assist you in determining the best disposal method. Available at MesaRecycles.org or on the MesaNow App.

Dog Days of Summer
With the dog days of summer upon us, Mesa Animal Control is reminding residents to protect their pets as temperatures rises in Arizona.
Check out these safety tips:
- Temperatures inside a car can increase by 20 degrees in just 10 minutes! If the weather is warm, leave your animals at home.
- Call 911 if you see an animal locked in a vehicle.
- Water evaporates faster in hotter temperatures, so make sure your animals have an adequate supply of water in a plastic bowl.
- Shade and shelter from the heat are just as important as water; make sure your animal has access to adequate shade throughout the day.

Balloon Blackouts
Mylar Balloons and Power Lines Don’t Mix
With all the graduation parties and other celebrations occurring, it’s a great time to remind everyone of the danger of mixing Mylar balloons and power lines.
Mylar balloons are metallic and when they touch a power line, it can cause a dangerous short circuit leading to a power outage, fire and serious injuries.
For your safety and the safety of others:
- Never release balloons outside
- Keep balloons away from power lines
- Don’t touch balloons entangled in wires
- Always tie balloons to a weight
- Puncture, deflate, and dispose of balloons properly
If you see a balloon caught in a power line or a downed line, call 480-644-2262 or 911. Never attempt to retrieve anything entangled in power lines.
