Mesa’s Water Outlook

You may have heard about a looming shortage on the Colorado River - but there is much more to this story. Each valley city has its own water outlook and Mesa has long prepared for shortages through careful planning and a robust water portfolio. Mesa residents would not be affected by initial shortages on the river. Follow the City of Mesa on social media and stay tuned for our series of posts about Mesa's water including some of the innovative ways we expand our water resources and operate efficiently to ensure a sound water future. Mesa Water Resources still encourages you to use water efficiently - because it's the right thing to do. Check out our Water Conservation resources to help you save water and money.

Earth Day 2021

Earth Day - April 22

Earth-Friendly Ideas for Earth Day

Earth Day, celebrated each year on April 22, reminds us about the many ways we can protect our planet to have a lasting and positive impact. Mesa is taking action on climate change by adopting an aspirational Climate Action Plan with programs that prioritize renewable energy and reduced carbon emissions. We invite our community members to take action from your homes and businesses, too. Find earth-friendly and easy-to-implement action steps below, and find 50+ more ideas by visiting Mesaaz.gov/Sustainability.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Reducing waste is our best option in managing our waste stream. It minimizes the use of resources and extends the life of our landfills. Avoid single-use and single-serving packaging. We should then reuse what we have and extend the life of our products. Reusable water bottles and shopping bags are easy alternatives to incorporate in our daily lives. Finally, we should recycle but recycle right.  Placing non-accepted items does more harm than good to Mesa’s recycling program. And of course, when purchasing items, make sure to look for items made from post-consumer recycled material. For more information, visit MesaReycles.org.

Save Water in Your Landscape

By removing grass and replacing it with a Xeriscape – a water-wise landscape – you can save water and money each month. We even have an incentive up to $575 to help you do so and to plant a tree, too. In fact, while marking your calendar, April 30 is Arbor Day, a day set aside for planting or caring for your trees. Find out if you qualify for the incentive including our “Trees Are Cool” program by visiting Mesaaz.gov/Conservation.

Recycle Tip: Break down cardboard boxes

With the continued popularity of online shopping, we have seen an increase in cardboard recycling.  Unfortunately, if boxes are not properly broken down, it interferes with the collection process.

  • Boxes can become wedged in the barrel and do not come out when serviced by the truck
  • Boxes can be too large to fit in the opening of the truck
  • Overloaded barrels may not be serviced

We appreciate you removing all packaging and breaking down boxes before placing them in your recycle barrel.  This will ensure you have plenty of space for all your recyclables and eliminate any disruption in your collection service. Learn more about our trash and recycling services at Mesaaz.gov/waste.

April is National Safe Digging Month

National Safe Digging Month is a reminder to anyone who excavates or digs:  to call 811 or visit arizona811.com!  The results of a recent national survey revealed that 42% of homeowners who plan to dig this year for projects like landscaping, installing a fence or mailbox, building a deck or patio and other DIY projects, will put themselves and their communities at risk by not calling 811.

Some utility lines may be buried at shallow depths where an unintended shovel thrust can be dangerous and costly. Locating buried utilities is the simplest, easiest way to prevent accidental damage. This keeps everyone safe and protects the vital utilities we rely on every day.

No matter the size of the project, you must request underground utility locating at least two full working days before you begin. IT’S FREE AND IT’S THE LAW!

For more information, call 811 or visit

ERAP

Emergency Rental and Utility Assistance

The City of Mesa continues to accept applications for the 2021 Emergency Rental and Utility Assistance Program (ERAP) in response to COVID-19’s financial impact to Mesa residents. Funded through the U.S. Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021, the program provides rent and utility assistance to prevent eviction and homelessness.

To qualify, you must be a City of Mesa resident impacted by COVID through a significant lifechanging event such as loss of job, reduced hours and medical expenses. Your household monthly gross income must be at or below 80 percent of the median depending on the number of household members.

Applicants to the 2021 ERAP program must have documentation including a photo ID, proof of income for all household members for the last 60 days, a current lease agreement and a current utility bill. Assistance is based on availability of funding.
