Colleagues,
I’ve been a public servant all my adult life. That’s 34 years and counting. And I can tell you, the reward of serving the community and making a true difference in people’s lives never gets old. That’s what makes it hard to say goodbye.
I am retiring in April, and soon the Board of Supervisors will begin its search for the next county manager. Serving in this role for the last six and a half years has been an absolute privilege, and I’m proud of what we have accomplished together. I truly believe we’re a different kind of government—a mix of smarts and heart, efficiency and empathy, innovation and integrity.
Throughout my time as county manager—and especially over the past few years—I’ve tried to make this a better workplace for current and future staff. We’ve changed the way we manage employee performance so staff are held to the same standards and top performers are rewarded. We’ve created more opportunities for advancement within this organization. We’ve worked to ensure our pay is competitive. We’ve created flexibility for remote work. We’ve established Volunteer 13K to allow staff paid time to volunteer. We’ve greatly expanded an already strong benefits package with both physical and mental health care, paid parental leave, and a future on-site childcare center for employees. And we’ve put more resources into telling residents who we are and what we do.
Not everyone appreciates government workers. But I know better. I have seen the dedication, care, and passion that you bring to jobs across more than 50 departments. I see it in workers who are brand new and those who have served as long as I have. And so I’ll be leaving with great pride in this organization and great hope for its future. You can stand tall knowing the work you do matters.
The work isn’t over for me yet. I’m going to be busy these next few months as the county transitions to new leadership. But I wanted you to know about my plans now, before they’re public, and again express my gratitude and respect for all of you.
