Filings and Scanners
The Clerk’s Office is seeing an increase of non-standard items submitted with paper filings. The office processes submitted documents through black-and-white scanners designed to image 8 ½ x 11 non-colored paper. Those images become the official record and the Clerk’s Office disposes of the originals. Do not include items such as CDs, DVDs, VHS and cassette tapes, photographs not copied to 8 ½ x 11 paper, paperback books or other items that cannot be scanned, do not comply with court rules or that should be submitted as courtroom exhibits. If left with the Clerk’s Office, there is no process to scan these items or for getting them to the assigned judicial officer. Documents, photographs, maps, charts, select pages from books and other items that are not standard sizes should be formatted to an 8 ½ x 11 size on white paper before filing with the Clerk. Keep the originals as needed for use at hearing or trial or obtain specific direction from your judicial officer to deliver non-standard items directly to their division or if the division determines the items must be handled by the Clerk’s Office.

Bench/Bar
The Maricopa County Bar Association and the Superior Court in Maricopa County co-host a quarterly meeting between members of the bench and bar. The get-togethers are an informal opportunity to obtain information about filing, courtroom practices, security and access, judicial rotations and other matters of interest to the bench and bar. The Clerk’s Office and the Administrative Office of the Courts made brief presentations about eFiling at the meeting in June. The committee is co-chaired by Superior Court Judge Christopher Whitten and MCBA President-Elect David Funkhouser III. The quarterly meetings are open to any interested attorney; participation and input are encouraged. The next meeting will be on September 11, 2012 at Noon in Judge Whitten’s courtroom on the 2nd floor of the Old Courthouse in downtown Phoenix. For more information, contact Elizabeth Evans at evanse001@superiorcourt.maricopa.gov.

Construction Update
The entry at the West Court Building where attorneys have had an express lane has been closed as a safety precaution during the demolition phase of construction of the lobby and surrounding areas. The closure is expected to remain in effect until August 17. You will still be able to exit through the West Court Building. An express entrance for attorneys has been added at the Central Court Building to accommodate expedited entry to the courts. Public entrances are available at the Central Court Building and through the South Court Tower. Please allow additional time to access the courts during construction.
