Reduce Dust During Winter Ryegrass Planting in Maricopa County |
|
Clearing of Bermuda grass prior to overseeding often leads to dust emissions which can negatively impact air quality. This fall the Maricopa County Air Quality Department (MCAQD) is asking county residents and businesses to do their part to improve air quality for the benefit of our community. |
|
|
MCAQD offers the following tips to help prevent dust during the overseeding process:
- Avoid scalping on windy days and on High Pollution Advisory days.
- Apply water to the area prior to scalping.
- Reduce the area to be overseeded and the depth of scalping.
- Keep dust collection screens and filters in good working condition.
- Sweep loose debris from paved surfaces instead of using a leaf blower; see the P-25 Ordinance to learn about leaf blower use restrictions.

Smoke from wood burning contributes to higher levels of air pollution especially during the winter months, causing Maricopa County to be at risk of not meeting federal health standards. If Maricopa County is unable to meet these health standards, the community may be subject to burdensome and costly federal regulations and stricter rules that could also mean higher fines.
Wood burning negatively impacts the health of Maricopa County residents. Exposure to particulates from smoke pollution can aggravate lung disease, causing asthma attacks and acute bronchitis, and may also increase susceptibility to respiratory infections.
Please consider alternatives to wood burning this holiday season. Learn more about the ways you can ‘Burn Cleaner, Burn Better’ and help keep Maricopa County a healthy place to live.

Each year around the holidays, Valley hospitals see a noticeable increase in patients with respiratory issues caused by smoke from fireworks. Children and the elderly are the most affected, but even healthy adults can experience symptoms.
Why is firework smoke so bad?
Fireworks release a mixture of fine particles and toxic chemicals like heavy metals and perchlorates. These airborne pollutants can irritate the lungs and affect those with preexisting conditions, causing:
- Increased respiratory symptoms (coughing, shortness of breath, airway irritation)
- Decreased lung function
- Aggravated asthma
- Development of chronic bronchitis
- Irregular heartbeat
- Heart attacks
- Premature death in people with heart or lung disease
