Whether on the news or social media, we've all seen the stories and videos of teens engaging in violent behavior. Teen violence is not unique to a certain area. It happens throughout Maricopa County, and we need to address it.
- Videos of these incidents spread rapidly on social media, forcing victims to relive the experience and perpetuating the cycle of violence.
- These videos need to be reported to local authorities so those involved can be identified and held accountable.
What's next: MCAO is teaming up with partners across the valley to spread the message: Report, Don't Repost! Stay tuned for more.
Making a Positive Impact: MCAO Recognized by National Association of Counties
Exciting News! The National Association of Counties recognized three MCAO programs for their positive impact on our communities!
🔹 Organized Retail Theft - Safe Shopping Campaign MCAO's safe shopping campaign showcases our partnership with law enforcement and commitment to combating organized retail theft. The campaign encourages the community to report suspicious behavior and work with authorities to prevent crime.
🔹 Victim Services Portal The Victim Services Portal streamlines crime victim case notifications and allows victims to easily access information on victims’ rights, restitution, and post-conviction.
🔹 Law Student Internship Stipend The program provides training and offers stipends to second and third year law students, enabling them to gain valuable experience and attract top applicants who might not otherwise be able to afford an unpaid internship.
To read the full program descriptions, visit the NACo website and search by state.

We are proud to announce that Deputy County Attorney Ashley Marshall is the Rising Star Award recipient of the Arizona Prosecuting Attorneys’ Advisory Council.
The Rising Star Award celebrates a prosecutor with a passion for justice, an exceptional work ethic, and outstanding legal acumen. Ashley was nominated by one of her former bureau chiefs. Among the group of nominees were prosecutors from cities, counties, and agencies from across the state.
“Ashley’s award is a testament to her dedication, hard work, and commitment to making a positive impact in the office and the community. She embodies all that it means to be a beacon of justice.” - County Attorney Rachel Mitchell.
Every day Maricopa County residents get on the road in hopes of making it to their destination safely, sadly not all of them do.
Here are 3 things you can do stay safe on the road:
|
1. Don't Engage in Road Rage: Did you know speeding is one of the most common aggressive behaviors on the road? Aggressive driving behaviors can endanger you and others on the road. Being a responsible driver will make the road safer for everyone.
|
|
2. Save Lives, Don't DUI: Summer fun can quickly turn tragic with a DUI. It's crucial to remember that driving under the influence puts everyone on the road at risk. The same rules apply when on a boat out on the water. Stay safe by planning ahead, designating a sober driver, and never driving under the influence.
|
|
3. Check The Backseat: Arizona heat can be deadly, especially inside a locked car. Don't let unexpected routine changes make you forget the precious cargo in your backseat. Set a reminder or place an item in your backseat so you look before you lock!
|
Call for Help: If you experience road rage, see a drunk driver, or notice a child left behind in a hot car, take action and call 9-1-1.
Safety is What We Do
These days, busy is an understatement. It often feels as though there isn't enough time in the day to do basic things such as eating and sleeping, and much less to think about things like your personal or home safety.
Luckily, you have a group of experts ready to help out and answer your questions!
Save the Date: We hope you'll attend a Safety Fair hosted by our office and our partners on August 14th in Mesa and learn about staying safe in your community.
Final Update for the 2024 Legislative Session
Improving Arizona's Laws: Out of the 12 bills that MCAO supported during the 2024 legislative session, 7 were signed into law! Two more bills that MCAO advocated for were signed into law last month.
Holding Thieves Accountable: Senate Bill 1185 increases the penalty for catalytic converter thefts to a Class Six Felony, if the violation involves 10 or more catalytic converters.
Protecting Victims: House Bill 2665 improves protections for sex trafficking victims and allows law enforcement to charge individuals who facilitate child sex trafficking and those who seek it to purchase sex with a young child.
The legislative session has ended for 2024, but you can find the complete list of bills MCAO supported or opposed, along with their outcomes, on our website.
