The Mitchell Minute: Charging Decisions at MCAO
Introducing....the Mitchell Minute! A series dedicated to answering your questions about the criminal justice system. Last month, we discussed why bail is important for keeping communities safe.
This month, County Attorney Rachel Mitchell guides you through the process of how charging decisions are made at MCAO.
South American Theft Groups
If you Google "South American Theft Group," you'll find numerous articles detailing burglaries committed by Chilean nationals who enter the country as tourists, acquire false identification to evade detection, and commit these crimes.
In recent months, these highly coordinated criminal groups have been targeting and burglarizing homes throughout the valley. Our office has recently indicted six individuals accused of these crimes and is currently reviewing charges against additional suspects.
What Can You Do? It's important, now more than ever, to prioritize residential safety. Ensure your security cameras, alarms, motion sensor lights, and window sensors are all properly set up and functional.
If You See Something, Report It! Our office and law enforcement can only fulfill our duties if crimes are reported promptly. If you notice suspicious activity in your neighborhood, please contact your local law enforcement agency.
East Valley Teen Violence
Listen to a message from County Attorney Rachel Mitchell.
News coverage of teen violence is everywhere. In recent months, our office has handled numerous cases of teen violence originating in the East Valley, including the tragic homicide of Preston Lord.
Don't Post, Report! Social media significantly contributes to incidents of teen violence. A troubling social media trend involves individuals posting and sharing fight videos online. If you encounter such videos, refrain from sharing or posting them; instead, report them to your local law enforcement agency.
A Resource for the Community: We understand that teen violence is an important topic for the community. That's why we've created a webpage that shares updates from the county attorney, news releases, and outlines MCAO's charging decisions for these cases.
