Two Years of Accomplishments
This month commemorated County Attorney Rachel Mitchell's two-year anniversary leading MCAO. Few offices in the county have as much direct impact on your safety and quality of life as the Maricopa County Attorney's Office. Since County Attorney Mitchell assumed the monumental task of leading this office, a lot has changed for the better.
 By The Numbers
Prosecution Efforts: Since April 2023, MCAO received 44,577 new cases. Of these new cases, 8,454 resulted in a conviction or plea deal requiring prison time or probation.
Tackling Backlogs: Since taking office, County Attorney Mitchell slashed the backlog of cases waiting to be reviewed by 66%, from nearly 11,000 cases to 3,361! The backlog of Officer Involved Shooting cases has also been reduced to zero.
Support for Victims: MCAO is committed to supporting victims while seeking justice. Last year, more than 21,000 victims received over 1.5 million services and our Victim Services Division was recognized nationally for its efforts.
Combatting Fentanyl: Over the last two years, MCAO prosecuted 11,189 fentanyl cases and conducted six fentanyl forums across the valley, including the first forum entirely in Spanish. Outreach efforts distributed nearly 600 Narcan kits to the community.
The Mitchell Minute: Understanding Grand Jury
Grand juries play a crucial role in maintaining the flow of the criminal justice system.
But what exactly do they do? How is it different from a trial jury? When is it used? Why is it secret? Hear from County Attorney Rachel Mitchell and get the answers to all these questions and more!
National Crime Victims' Rights Week
You Can Count on Us: While crime may be unexpected, Maricopa County residents can rely on the County Attorney's Victim Services Division (VSD) to support them while our prosecutors seek justice.
Nationally Recognized: With nine Court Advocate Bureaus and more than 100 staff, the VSD informs victims' of their rights, shares case updates, offers support during court proceedings, provides short term counseling, and so much more. Recently, this division received national recognition as a leader in victim advocacy from the Crime Survivors and Justice Caucus.
Arizona Victim Bill of Rights: Many are unaware of the rights, services, and protections provided to crime victims by the state of Arizona. National Crime Victims' Rights Week may be coming to an end but we will continue to we shine a light on these rights and support victims all year long.
Animal Cruelty Awareness Month
An Interconnected Issue: The abuse, neglect, and mistreatment of animals happens much too often in our communities. There is a strong correlation between animal cruelty, child abuse and domestic violence. In many cases, animal cruelty serves as an indicator that other criminal activity may be taking place.
An MCAO Superhero: Throughout her law enforcement career, Detective Heather Krimm has been dedicated to combating animal cruelty. In a recent animal cruelty case, her work was critical in tracking down an offender, and in a different case, she helped hold an offender accountable for shooting a dog.
Hear more about this case from Detective Krimm and learn about why reporting animal abuse is so important to keeping our communities safe.
