The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors appointed a new Justice of the Peace for the San Tan Court. Sherwood Johnston III comes to the job with plenty of experience, having served in the Maricopa County Justice Courts for the past 17 years.
“Sherwood Johnston’s extensive experience as a Justice of the Peace Pro Tem and Hearing Officer make him a natural fit for this office,” said District 1 Supervisor Jack Sellers, whose district includes the San Tan Court. “Johnston is a seasoned, performance-driven judicial officer. In addition to serving the Justice Courts, he has over 30 years of judicial experience serving the town of Paradise Valley’s Municipal Court.”
Sherwood replaces Judge Sam Goodman who retired on November 30, 2022. Since Goodman was a Republican, state law required the Board to appoint another Republican to fill his position until the next election. Johnston will fulfill the remainder of the current term which runs through the end of December 31, 2024.
The appointee is also required to be a registered Arizona voter who lives within the district. The district spans from Gilbert Road on the West to Meridian on the East and from Hunt Highway on the South to McKellips in the North.
