Statement on Corporation Commission Involvement in Rio Verde Foothills Water Issue
“I am pleased that the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) has opened up docket #W-00000A-22-0194, which relates to the Rio Verde Foothills water issue. In my continued efforts to work with others collaboratively to find possible solutions, I approached all five Corporation Commission offices and ACC staff to inform them about the Rio Verde Foothills water issue and to convey the importance and urgency of this matter. I knew that the ACC could be a useful and beneficial partner because it is an entity that repeatedly does good work. I respect the leadership of Chairwoman Lea Marquez Peterson. Under her tenure, the ACC has tackled and solved many issues and problems facing Arizona, including those issues related to water. I especially want to thank Commissioner Anna Tovar for opening the docket and stating in her letter: “I appreciate Supervisor Galvin reaching out to my office to see if we can assist this community. It is my hope that this forum is productive and we are able to assist the Rio Verde Foothills in finding a solution so water service is not disrupted.
This is a significant development in our effort to find a permanent water solution for Rio Verde Foothills and an example of how governmental entities can and should work together in the best interest of residents.
The question before the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors is narrow; whether or not to approve the proposed formation of a Domestic Water Improvement District. The ACC's involvement allows a larger discussion about whether a public service corporation can provide and serve water through a standpipe to the Rio Verde Foothills community. I believe this additional pathway puts us closer to a solution involving the continued delivery of water. Somehow, someway, we will make it happen.”
