Summer Safety
In the Valley, when hot water starts coming out of both taps you know summers arrived! All jokes aside, summer is here and it's expected to be a hot one. According to the National Weather Service, we are expected to see higher than normal temperatures this year.
But heat isn't the only thing you should pay attention to this summer, keep reading to learn about what else affects our families during the summer months.
Help Prevent Vehicular Heatstroke
While Valley residents are no strangers to the heat, they need to be aware of the risk high temperatures can create for children. Aside from car crashes, heatstroke is the leading cause of death in vehicles for children under the age of 14.Even on days with mild temperatures, nothing can keep your child safe in a hot vehicle: not the color of your car, not a cracked window, or parking in the shade.
Vehicular heatstroke is completely preventable. The most important thing you can do? Get in a habit of checking your back seat every time you leave your vehicle!
Be Water Aware!
Lakes, rivers, pools all provide much needed relief from the harsh summer heat and even though they're relaxing, we should never let our guard down in the water. Adults are the first line of defense in keeping kids safe as drownings can happen at any age and any time. The most important thing to remember: Make sure kids never swim alone; if they're in the water, you should be too!
Talk To Your Kids About Internet Safety
May 25th was Missing Children's Day. A day created to raise awareness of cases of missing children throughout the country and the factors that contributed to their disappearance. Now-a-days, those factors are related to online safety. As kids head into their long and hot summer break, they'll be spending more time indoors and online. It's easy to think they won't make risky choices online, but unless you talk to them you might not know until it's too late. One thing you can do now: Talk to your kids and learn about what they do online.
