What Does This Data Tell Us?
The recent increase in cases shows us the pandemic is not over. It’s good news that we are seeing a relatively small number of cases in older adults. This means the vaccine is working. However, the increase among populations who are less likely to be vaccinated tells us that preventive measures are still necessary countywide. Until enough people are vaccinated, COVID-19 can keep spreading, especially if people stop taking the precautions that we know reduce the risk of getting or spreading COVID-19.

Is the Johnson And Johnson Vaccine Considered Safe?
Yes, on April 23rd, the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and FDA recommended that vaccination with the J&J/Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine resume among people 18 years and older. The fact sheet for recipients and caregivers was updated with information regarding an increased risk of thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) following vaccination with the J&J vaccine. TTS is a serious condition that involves blood clots with low platelets. Adult women less than 50 years old are at higher risk for this side effect, with about 7 cases per 1 million vaccinated women between the ages of 18-49. Existing safety monitoring systems allowed us to detect this very rare but serious side effect.

What Is An Emergency Use Authorization?
Three COVID-19 vaccines have received emergency use authorization by the FDA. You should know that the FDA takes EUA’s seriously and that tens of thousands of people were studied to determine both the effectiveness and safety of the vaccines prior to EUA being granted.
