|
|
|
Over the past 13 months, the Maricopa County Joint Information Center has sent approximately 270 of these COVID-19 updates to make sure our community has the information they need to make informed decisions during this public health emergency. We want this newsletter to continue to provide value for residents. We’re asking you to take a one-minute survey to help us understand how you want to receive information from us about COVID-19 and other Maricopa County services. This is the final day of the survey, so if you haven’t responded yet, please do so. Thanks!

Why Get Vaccinated?
There are a lot of good reasons to get vaccinated.
Here are a few:
- To protect yourself from serious illness or long-term health issues linked to COVID-19
- To protect those who can’t be vaccinated like infants, children, and people with weakened immune systems
- To slow the spread of the virus in our community and help us all get back to normal

Are There Side Effects from The Vaccines?
It’s normal to experience some mild discomfort following a vaccine.
This means it’s working and creating an immune response in your body.
You may feel soreness or experience some swelling in your arm. You may also feel tired, or have a headache, fever, or chills. These symptoms may impact your daily activities, but they shouldn’t last more than 2-3 days. If they continue or get worse, call your doctor, nurse, or clinic.
|
Could I Have an Allergic Reaction To The Vaccine?
Severe allergic reactions to vaccines are extremely rare. The FDA says the authorized COVID-19 vaccines appear to be safe for people with common food or environmental allergies. If you have had an immediate allergic reaction — even if it was not severe — to a vaccine or injectable therapy for another disease, ask your doctor if you should get a COVID-19 vaccine. Your doctor will help you decide what your options are.

How Long Does the Vaccine Last?
Immunization against COVID-19 will help protect you for the near future, but it’s still not clear how long the protection will last. We will have a clearer picture of how long immunity lasts in years to come when we have collected more data. Both natural immunity and immunity from the vaccine are important ways to fight COVID-19 that experts are trying to learn more about. Trusted sources like Maricopa County Public Health and CDC will keep the public informed as new evidence becomes available.

School POD Recognition
A partnership to vaccinate thousands of educators and childcare workers in Maricopa County is being honored with an award.
The Maricopa County School POD program provided more than 54,000 vaccinations for K–12 educators, school staff and childcare workers in a span of just ten weeks.
This week, the Arizona Partnership for Immunization (TAPI) awarded the program a 2021 “Hot Shot” award.
Working with public, private and charter schools, the Arizona School Administrators Association, the Arizona Charter Schools Association, Albertsons/Safeway and Fry’s pharmacies, and several health care partners, Public Health was able to make COVID-19 vaccine available to thousands of childcare workers and school employees across the county at the POD events.
Highlights include:
-
26,036 teachers, childcare workers and other essential education personnel have been fully vaccinated
-
17 districts hosted PODs
-
21 total districts offered vaccine
-
59 events took place across 70 days between Friday, January 22 – Thursday, April 1
Thank you to everyone involved in this effort! This award is yours, too!
