COVID-19 Vaccinations Start Tomorrow
|
|
COVID-19 vaccinations in Maricopa County start tomorrow morning. Public Health, working with HonorHealth and Banner Health, will open up two POD (Point of Dispensing) sites in different areas of the Valley to vaccinate frontline healthcare workers who have been pre-screened and scheduled for appointments. Out of 123,000 people estimated to be eligible for vaccination in Phase 1A, about 27,000 have gone through the screening process so far. Three more PODs will open on Monday in other regionalized locations. This effort is being supported in part by more than 1,200 volunteers, many of whom are medically-certified healthcare workers!
As a reminder, the general public will not be vaccinated as part of Phase 1A. With limited doses of the vaccine available (we have about 43,000 doses right now), priority has been given to those with the highest risk of exposure, such as healthcare workers and residents of long-term care facilities. It will likely be months before there is enough vaccine for everyone.

How Will I Know When It's My Turn To Get The Vaccine?
The graphic below shows a framework for how vaccines will be prioritized. We will learn more in the coming weeks as recommendations made at the federal level are passed down to states and counties. On Dec. 20th, the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices will meet to vote on their recommendations for prioritization of vaccine allocation for Phases 1B and 1C. At today’s press conference, Marcy Flanagan, Executive Director of Public Health, explained how people will know when they will have the opportunity to be vaccinated.

How Much Will It Cost To Be Vaccinated?
Airline Travel
Airline travel, especially around the holidays, comes with risks. Even outside of the plane cabin itself, you may encounter other areas where its harder to social distance such as airport security and gating areas. Masks are required at Sky Harbor International Airport, but you may encounter inconsistent mask wearing during your travels.
Here are some precautions to take if you plan to fly:
|
- Check airlines and airports for their policies and procedures about COVID-19.
- Check restrictions at your destination.
- Bring hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes.
- Consider what you would do if you became ill while you are away.
- Check airline policies on the COVID-19 safety precautions they have put in place.
- Visit CDC's travel website for more information.
Holiday Shopping
Still have some gifts to buy? If so, you might consider skipping the bustle of busy stores and taking advantage of options that lower your risk of getting or spreading COVID-19. For example:
- Shop online if possible.
- Use contactless services for purchased items, like curbside pick-up.
- Shop in open air markets, stay 6 feet away from others, and wear a mask.

Connect With Others
Even though in may not be wise to spend a lot of time together in-person with friends or loved ones, it is important to find other ways to connect, whether by video, phone, text, or social media.
The director of the Maricopa County Public Defender’s Office has started a campaign with this idea in mind. He’s asking people to simply call one person they know to say hi. Will you take the challenge?
Here’s the article about it published in the Arizona Republic.
