A Negative COVID-19 Test Doesn’t Mean You’re In The Clear
|
|
As COVID-19 spreads in our community, more people are getting tested. However, getting a negative test result does not necessarily make you COVID-free.
Symptoms can take up to two weeks to appear after you’ve been exposed, so you could get tested prior to having symptoms, test negative, and yet still become infected with the virus. The average time for COVID-19 symptoms to appear after infection is five days but can appear anytime between two and 14 days after exposure. This is why it’s important to continue your quarantine after a test (even if you feel fine) in case symptoms or infection occur at a later point within the 14-day period after exposure.

Fact Check: Are COVID-19 Cases Inflated Because Of Repeat Testing?
This is a question we get frequently, and the answer is no. Whether you test positive once or ten times in a 90-day period, you are classified as a single case, based on identifiable information that you provide to labs, doctors’ offices, or other testing sites.

7-Day Case Average
There are several metrics we can watch to get a sense of how much the virus is circulating in our community. One is the 7-day case average, which tells us an average of how many new cases have been reported daily for the previous seven days. This average is helpful for getting a better sense of how many new cases are reported even if there are lower reported numbers on weekends and higher reported numbers just after the weekend.
Here is how that number has changed over the past few months:
December 5: 3,298 cases/day
November 5: 1,177 cases/day
October 5: 363 cases/day
September 5: 267 cases/day

Hospitalization Numbers
Hospitals in the central region of the state (which includes Maricopa County) are seeing more COVID-19 patients. If current trends continue, health care providers worry about their capacity to treat patients.
To see the data for yourself, visit the Arizona Department of Health Services’ data dashboard and click on “Hospital COVID-19 Specific Metrics.” This is a serious issue and we need your help to ease the burden on our health care system.

Here’s what you can do:
- Stay home when you’re sick—this prevents spread to others, whether you have COVID-19, the flu, or something else
- Keep 6 feet of distance between yourself and others
- Wear a mask in public
- Avoid close contact with people outside of your household
- Get a flu shot
National Influenza Vaccination Week
This is National Influenza Vaccination Week, and we want to remind you that the best time to get your shot is now, before the flu begins circulating widely in our community.
Getting the flu vaccine means:
- You have a lower chance of getting the flu and passing it to others, including those who are at higher risk for severe illness, like young children, older adults, and those with chronic medical conditions.
- If you do get the flu, it tends to be milder and you are much less likely to be hospitalized if you had the flu shot that season.
Hundreds of millions of Americans have safely received flu vaccines over the past 50 years, and there has been extensive research supporting the vaccine’s effectiveness. What better time than now to protect yourself, your family, and your community?

Crisis Rental Assistance Program Extended
The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors voted today to provide additional funding to the County’s COVID Crisis Rental Assistance Program. Since mid-July, the program has provided financial assistance to 1,948 landlords and more than 5,300 households in Maricopa County. That amounts to 16,696 months (or $28.2 million) of paid rent to date, with the goal of preventing evictions. An additional $10 million of County general funds will be used to help approximately 2,000 additional households over the next three months. Completed applications that were submitted but were not able to receive CARES Act funding assistance will be the households primarily served.

Funeral Assistance Program
COVID-19 has impacted every aspect of our community. For many, the isolation, loss of employment, and impact to everyday activities has been overwhelming. For families who have had to the face the death of a family member during the pandemic, the impact is even greater. Many were not able to be with their loved on in their last moments and others are struggling to pay for burial expenses due to a loss of income from the pandemic.
Maricopa County and Valley of the Sun United Way are partnering to provide much-needed financial assistance to families in mourning through the Maricopa County Funeral Assistance Program, funded by federal CARES Act dollars.

Pandemic Breaks And Stress Relief
In a normal year, the holidays can be stressful. During a pandemic, that stress is likely to be even higher. It may even be taking a toll on your physical or mental health.
Some easy ways to help reduce the stress:
|
- Take breaks. Even a 15-minute break can be rejuvenating and help your body better manage stress.
- Turn off the TV.
- Put down your phone. Set timers on apps to remind yourself when it’s time to step away.
- Unplug from the news. Doomscrolling doesn’t help anybody.
- Go get some exercise.
- Do something you love.
- Connect with friends or family members by phone or video if you can’t see them in person.
