Important Information For Schools With Confirmed Outbreaks
In order to best protect the health and safety of staff and students at K-12 schools, Arizona Department of Health Services has defined a school “outbreak” using a low threshold. A school has an outbreak if:
- there are two or more PCR-positive cases of COVID-19 among students or staff within a 14-day period
- AND those cases could have reasonably come into contact with each other in school
- AND those cases do not come from the same household
An outbreak does not mean Public Health will recommend that a school closes, or even that an entire class should be quarantined. It simply means that schools are required by Arizona Department of Health Services to notify parents/guardians, students, staff, and their local health department that the outbreak has occurred. Public Health will provide guidance to the school about the appropriate next steps.

Could My Child Bring Home COVID-19 Without Knowing It?
Based on available evidence, most children are at lower risk for severe illness from COVID-19 than adults. However, even if they are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms, children can still transmit the virus to people who are at higher risk for more severe symptoms that may require hospitalization. That’s why it’s important to teach kids, even preschool-age, how to properly fight germs with basics like hand-washing and covering coughs and sneezes.

Don’t Flu Yourself. Getting The Vaccine Is Good For Your Health.
A lot of people think about getting a flu shot every year, but then don’t do it. In 2020, we know things are different. This fall and winter, we’ll have both the flu and COVID-19 circulating widely in our community. This is not just a health risk for individuals; it also has the potential to overwhelm our health care system. You can do your part by getting a flu shot. The shot makes it less likely you’ll get the flu (yay!). If you do get the flu, having the vaccine makes it less likely you’ll get so sick you’ll need to go to a doctor or a hospital (double yay!).
Public Health is providing free flu shots to anyone in the community, whether you have insurance or not. Find times and locations that work for you at Maricopa.gov/flu.
