Getting vaccinated by the end of October protects you for the entire flu season, even if the flu starts circulating earlier than normal. Maricopa County Public Health is holding free flu shot events across the county, including a recent one at Isaac Middle School in Phoenix (see video above). Visit Maricopa.gov/flu to find a time and location that works for you and your family. There are options across the Valley, with or without insurance.

What To Know About The Flu Vaccine
- Getting the vaccine means you have a lower chance of getting the flu and passing it to others, including those who are at higher risk for severe illness, like young children, older adults, and those with chronic medical conditions.
- If you do get the flu after you’ve had the flu vaccine, it tends to be milder and you are much less likely to be hospitalized.
- The flu vaccine DOES NOT cause flu illness or increase your risk for other respiratory viruses like COVID-19. Hundreds of millions of Americans have safely received flu vaccines over the past 50 years, and there has been extensive research supporting the vaccine’s effectiveness.

Hospitalization Numbers
Typically, an increase in cases will lead to an increase in hospitalizations about two weeks later. The Arizona Department of Health Services tracks hospitalization trends on its data dashboard. Just click on “Hospital COVID-19 Specific Metrics.”
Please do your part to ease the burden on our health care system in the weeks ahead:
- Stay home when you’re sick
- Keep 6 feet of distance between yourself and others
- Wear a mask in public
- Avoid large groups
- Get a flu shot

COVID-19 Outbreaks In Schools
So far, there have been 21 COVID-19 outbreaks at K-12 schools in Maricopa County. Of 77 cases related to the outbreaks, 51 are in students and 26 are in staff. While the word “outbreak” may raise concern, for COVID-19, an outbreak simply means two or more cases that do not live in the same household and could have come in contact with each other.
Parents and guardians can learn more about outbreaks and what actions they can expect from Public Health and their school district by visiting our FAQ page.

COVID-19 Testing For Students and Families
Public Health is working with schools to ensure COVID-19 testing is available to students who may have been exposed to the virus. The good news is that testing options continue to expand. It’s not just nasal swabs; students may be able to get a saliva test, which is less intrusive. In addition, there may be rapid testing options so families can get results sooner.
To locate a community testing event near you or to find links to testing providers, visit our testing page. These events are open to the public.
