If you’re experiencing cold or flu-like symptoms, you may feel like you need to get tested for COVID-19 to ease your mind.  As you know, people with COVID-19 report a wide range of symptoms—from mild to severe.

In some instances, people infected with COVID-19 have no symptoms or their symptoms are so mild they don’t feel sick.  These individuals are still capable of spreading the virus.  That’s why it’s so important for all of us to take preventive measures, especially when we’re out in public.

Today is the final day of summer, and it’s worth looking back at case trends over the past three months.  You’ll remember that cases spiked in June and peaked in July.  After countywide mask requirements and additional statewide actions, we saw case numbers go down in July, reducing the burden on our healthcare system.  Continued mitigation efforts in August and September led to a situation where some school districts are now able to offer in-person learning.

The Board of Supervisors met in executive session today to hear legal advice on the mask regulation based on updates from subject matter experts at Public Health.  The Board does not deliberate or make policy in executive session.  The Board takes case numbers, rate of infection, and all other relevant factors into consideration when discussing pandemic mitigation tools such as the mask mandate.  Any proposed changes to the ordinance would be the subject of a public meeting.

To date, Maricopa County has awarded more than $20 million in grants to local businesses and non-profits who suffered financial losses due to COVID-19.  The Board of Supervisors recently expanded the program to make more than $60 million in grants available.  Interested businesses and non-profits can see a list of qualifications and apply at azfoundation.org/MaricopaRelief.  This program is funded with federal CARES Act dollars.   

Non-profit “Sounds of Autism” makes a big difference in our community.  Now, with a grant awarded through Maricopa County’s Small Business Relief Program, the organization expects to be able to weather the financial storm of COVID-19 to do even more in the coming year.
