TODAY'S KEY MESSAGE
How We’re Ramping Up Flu Vaccination Efforts This Year
Public Health offers free flu vaccination events every year for those who may not have access otherwise. This year, the department is planning for a much wider distribution of flu vaccine. The hope is to limit the number of people who are hospitalized for the flu at a time when COVID-19 is already putting a burden on hospital systems.
At today’s press conference, Executive Director of Public Health, Marcy Flanagan, talked about local vaccination plans and the importance of getting a flu shot this year.
Field teams with Maricopa County Public Health and ASU have been offering free, voluntary COVID-19 antibody tests in 29 selected communities across Maricopa County. This testing will continue through September 20. The serosurvey will help us better understand how many people have antibodies for COVID-19 in Maricopa County, which will help us understand when and how we could reach community immunity and relax mitigation strategies like social distancing and mask wearing. We need 105 additional participants this week to reach our goal.
For individuals in the communities where testing is being offering, we ask that you strongly consider being part of something bigger.
We know people are anxious to get back to normal, or some semblance of it. Strong participation in the serosurvey will help us get there.
Get tested outside of your home or by making an appointment at our mobile medical clinic, whichever you prefer. You’ll get your own results AND help inform public health strategies we are developing specifically for Maricopa County. We want this to be convenient and helpful for individuals as they help us understand the needs of our community.
How Will I Know It’s Safe For My Child To Resume In-Person Learning?
The two key factors to consider are the amount of spread in the community where the school is located, and what safety measures the school is taking to protect the health of students, staff, and teachers.
Here are some other points to keep in mind:
Based on available evidence, most children are at lower risk for severe illness from COVID-19 than adults.
Even if they are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms, children can still transmit the virus to people who are at higher risk for more severe symptoms that may require hospitalization.
If your child or your household members have significant underlying health conditions, you should talk with your healthcare provider and discuss any concerns you may have.
Plans for the November general election are set. The Elections Department and Recorder’s Office presented their plans to handle historic turnout and ensure safe and secure in-person and mail-in voting at the Board of Supervisors meeting today.
Don’t forget to complete your 2020 Census. It’s easy, secure, and important. An accurate count means Arizona will receive its fair share of federal funding for infrastructure, emergency response, and community services. Will you help?
