We Double Check Our Covid-19 Data

Did you know County data on COVID-associated deaths is reviewed regularly to remove deaths from causes such as car accidents or drug overdoses? As of this week, those deaths only accounted for 7 (.02%) of all COVID-19 deaths in Maricopa County. |

How We Count Covid-19 Deaths
Maricopa County is currently reporting 2,960 deaths associated with COVID-19, which amounts to deaths in about 2% of all known cases. At this point in the pandemic, this is our best estimate, based on a review of death certificate information and laboratory test results.
In order to capture most of the deaths associated with COVID-19, those who die within 60 days of a positive PCR test for COVID-19 are initially considered a COVID-associated death by Maricopa County Public Health. Then, epidemiologists regularly review and exclude those deaths due to injury or poisoning (which include car accidents, gunshots and overdoses) where it’s clear COVID-19 is not the primary cause. This is an important part of making sure we are not overcounting deaths. As of this week, there have been just 7 deaths due to injury or poisoning, which is .02% of the total deaths caused by or associated with COVID-19. Public Health will continue to revise death counts as this process is repeated over the course of the pandemic.
It’s important to emphasize we will not have a final count of deaths caused by and associated with COVID-19 until after the pandemic.

What You Can Do
Case counts have dropped in our community because we are all working together to slow the spread. We know what works. Let’s keep at it, Arizona!
|

- ALWAYS - Keep at least six feet of distance from others when out in public
- WHEN POSSIBLE - Limit contact with those outside of your household, especially if you are in a high-risk group
- ALWAYS - Stay home when you are sick
- ALWAYS – Stay home as much as possible when a household member has tested positive for COVID-19 except to get essential medical care, prescriptions, and food
- FREQUENTLY - Wash hands with soap and water, and use alcohol-based hand sanitizer if unable to wash hands
- ALWAYS - Wear a mask or cloth face covering when going out in public

Why Should I Get A Flu Shot This Year?
Flu vaccines have been safely given to millions of Americans, kids and adults, for more than 50 years. The bottom line is, if you get a flu vaccine, you are less likely to get flu. And if you do get it, you are less likely to need to go to a doctor’s office, urgent care or emergency room.
A 2018 study showed that from 2012 to 2015, flu vaccination among adults reduced the risk of being admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) with flu by 82 percent. Public Health is offering free flu shots for anyone 6 months through 18 years of age at its immunization clinics. Please call ahead to ensure vaccine is available and make an appointment.
