A Deeper Dive Into The Data
|
|
The most frequently asked questions at this point in the pandemic center around Public Health data. Today’s update addresses some of those questions. |
|
How Many Current Cases Are There?
The short answer is, we don't know for sure but we have a good idea. Our daily case counts include COVID-19 cases reported in the past 24 hours, but because of the time it takes to process and report test results, a positive case reported today doesn’t necessarily mean a current case. There are people who may not know they are ill yet, or who have test results pending. We are currently seeing about a six-day lag between when a test specimen is collected and when the result is reported to Public Health.
The bottom line is, our daily case counts have dropped significantly from their peak of more than 3,000 new cases reported each day in late June. Our average is now under 500 new cases reported each day.
Arizona Department of Health Services tracks the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19. This provides a sense of the current number of people who are very sick with COVID-19, but does not capture the totality of all current cases since most people have mild illness and do not need to be hospitalized.

Are We Meeting Statewide School Reopening Benchmarks?
Arizona Department of Health Services set three benchmarks to determine the level of community spread of COVID-19 and to help school decision makers determine what type of instruction model is most appropriate. Here are the recommended benchmarks and how Maricopa County overall is performing:
1) Case rates below 100 cases per 100,000 individuals for two consecutive weeks: Not Met.
Maricopa County was below 100 cases/100k people for the most recent week (August 2), but not the week before.
2) Two consecutive weeks of percent positivity below 7%: Not Met.
The percent of positive tests has declined in Maricopa County, but was still 9% for the most recent week (August 2).
3) Two consecutive weeks with hospital visits for COVID-like illnesses below 10%: Met.
Covid-like illness reported in Maricopa County has been under 10% for the past two consecutive weeks.

How Will Cases at Schools Be Reported?
The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) will now require schools, child care centers and shelters to report outbreaks of COVID-19 to their local health departments.
The measure applies to public schools, charter schools, and private schools with students from kindergarten through 12th grade, as well as child care establishments and shelters.

If People Are Tested Multiple Times, Isn’t That Skewing The Numbers?
|
|
No. Public Health counts total COVID-19 cases by individual, so a person who tested positive for COVID-19 multiple times would still only be counted once in our data.

What Trends Have We Seen Since The Countywide Mask Mandate?
Since the countywide mask mandate went into effect, daily case counts have decreased almost 90% from their peak. This decrease began approximately 14 days after the mask regulations went into effect, which is the earliest we would expect to see an impact. Daily case counts have been below 500 for several days.
