Public Health Provides School Reopening Guidance
Maricopa County Department of Public Health held its first meeting with a small group of school and community leaders earlier this week to discuss metrics that would allow schools to open for in-person learning. At today’s news conference, Executive Director Marcy Flanagan outlined the goals of this group and how Public Health is positioned to help schools after reopening.
Recommendations for Schools and Parents
Public health provides specific guidance to schools and parents based on the data that is most relevant to inform them about the level of COVID-19 transmission in their community.
Dr. Rebecca Sunenshine provided an update on the current local data.
We do not yet know what causes MIS-C. However, we know that many children with MIS-C had the COVID-19 virus, or had been around someone with COVID-19. MIS-C can be serious, even deadly, but most children diagnosed with this condition recover with medical care.
The Maricopa County Department of Public Health started working with healthcare providers in early May, after an association between MIS-C and COVID-19 was reported by CDC. There have been eight confirmed cases of MIS-C in Maricopa County
Governor Doug Ducey’s executive order paused the operations on gyms, bars, nightclubs, movie theaters, water parks, and tubing. After July 27, the pause of these operations will be reviewed for repeal or revision every two weeks.
Businesses seeking to resume operations once the pause has expired must demonstrate compliance with public health guidance as determined by the Arizona Department of Health Services.
While delivery or curbside pickup options are still the best way to limit potential exposure to the virus, some restaurants offer dine-in service. If dining out is a part of your plans, take precautions to protect your health.

Testing Options
Maricopa County is working with trusted partners to provide testing in communities around the Valley. The goal is to enhance the testing capacity already put in place by the state of Arizona and some cities.
The Elections Department has posted unofficial results on Results.Maricopa.Vote and will update the tally after 5 p.m. daily until all valid ballots are counted. The Supervisors will canvass the election on August 14.
