Hospitalization Numbers, Explained
A new requirement that hospitals report all COVID-19 hospitalizations to the state has resulted in some changes to our data. In Maricopa County, you may have noticed our hospitalization rate has gone from 4% to 6% over the past few days. This does not reflect more hospitalizations in recent days; rather, this is an adjustment to the total number of cases that have been hospitalized at some point since the pandemic began. Essentially, hospital reports make our data more complete.
People who are looking for a better idea of current hospitalization trends should refer to the Arizona Department of Health Services dashboard and look at both inpatient use and hospitalization. This data shows the number of COVID-19 patients in the hospital has been declining in recent days.
