Maricopa County has topped 100,000 reported COVID-19 cases since January.  More than 250 Public Health volunteers who have contributed 5,000+ hours to the COVID-19 response.  Here are a few numbers to put the current situation in perspective.  More than 90% of our total cases have been reported since June 1.  Nearly 50% were reported in the first three weeks of July.  These trends indicate increased transmission in our community.  An estimated 40% of COVID-19 patients are either asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic, meaning they could be spreading the disease without being aware they have it.  There is some positive news that in the weeks following the countywide mask mandate, we have begun trending downward in terms of daily cases. Let's continue to do are part to stay healthy.

Be well.

COVID-19 Testing Locations

Testing and vial

Getting a COVID-19 test is getting easier as more locations become available.  Arizona Department of Health has information on locations and how to register.  In addition, Maricopa County is playing a support role in the push to provide more COVID-19 testing throughout the region allocating $25 million of federal CARES Act funding to help vendors set up testing sites.  More information on those events will be released in the coming days and weeks.

Public Health

Books

Public Health's role is to advise schools, not make policies.  School policy is made by the Arizona Department of Education at the state level and school administrators and school boards at the local level.  Maricopa County Public Health provides guidance that helps these groups make informed decisions.  Governor Ducey announced at his most recent press conference that public health benchmarks will be created to determine when it's safe for schools to reopen for in-person learning.  Those benchmarks are expected to be released by August 7th.

Rental Assistance Program

Maricopa County is beginning a new rental assistance program for residents outside of the cities of Phoenix and Mesa who have been impacted by the COVID-19 emergency which will be funded with $30 million of federal CARES Act dollars. While no single government action or program can fully address the issue, we designed this program to prevent evictions and help as many people as possible. Residents should also note Governor Ducey's extension of a moratorium on residential evictions until October 31, 2020.

District Update

Flood Control D4

The Flood Control District has a program to help local cities solve small-scale flooding problems.  The Small Projects Assistance Program (SPAP) allows cities and towns apply for up to $500,000 in funding to design and build flood control structures.  The Board  recently approved a project in District 4.

The County will partner with the City of Litchfield Park to reconstruct Vista Verde Drive, routing stormwater to a retention basin. Eleven condominiums are currently at risk for flooding due to undersized catch basins.  Adjustments to the road and the addition of a small channel will allow water to be quickly directed away from homes.
