If You’re Healthy Right Now, You Play A Key Role In Slowing The Spread
|
|
Because most people who get COVID-19 have mild illness, it may be tempting to think that only people at highest risk should worry. However, right now, more than half of all of Maricopa County’s COVID-19 cases are age 20-44, making that age group the most likely to spread it to others, including people who are high risk.
That means younger people play a critical role in reducing the impact of COVID-19 on our community so fewer people get the disease and fewer will need to be hospitalized.

Underlying Conditions
National data, state data, and county data all show the same thing: People with underlying medical conditions are most likely to have serious illness due to COVID-19. That group makes up 60% of hospitalizations and 64% of deaths in Maricopa County.
According to CDC case surveillance, hospitalizations are six times higher among patients with a reported underlying medical conditions and deaths due to COVID-19 are 12 times higher among that group.

How To Read County Data Reports
-
Total confirmed cases: This is the number of COVID-19 cases reported in Maricopa County since January 22, 2020. It is a running total.
- It does not represent the current number of people in our community who have COVID-19, nor does it address recovered cases.
- No one is counted twice in these numbers, even if they have been tested multiple times.
-
% hospitalized/ICU: This is the percentage of the total confirmed COVID-19 cases who have ever been admitted to a hospital or intensive care unit for COVID-19.
Where to Wear A Mask
You know it’s important to wear a mask; but where is it necessary?
-
Enclosed public spaces: The countywide mask regulations require masks even when social distancing is possible. This includes businesses, offices, museums, restaurants, coffee shops, and government buildings.
-
Public transportation: If you ride the bus or the light rail, you’ll need to mask up to reduce the risk of getting or spreading the virus.

Preparing for School
Back-to-school preparations often involve shopping for school supplies or clothes. But this year, there are some other important things parents will need to do to set their children (and their schools) up for success:
|
-
Read your school’s plan for classes this fall and discuss these plans with your child, in an age-appropriate way. Let them know what to expect so they aren’t surprised on Day 1.
-
Have children over age 5 practice wearing a mask before classes begin. We don’t know yet whether masks will be a requirement at all Maricopa County schools, but it is likely they will be a part of the return plan for at least some schools.
-
Remind kids about the importance of good hygiene. This can be especially challenging for younger kids, but the more independent they can be in washing their hands and covering coughs and sneezes, the better.
-
Be patient with teachers. Returning to school during a pandemic will be stressful for everyone. Teachers will be asked to educate in new and difficult ways, while also trying to protect the health of their class. Do what you can to support them.
