Deciding to Venture Out
While many public places are now open in some capacity, you may be wondering whether it’s a good idea to venture out. By taking personal protective measures and planning ahead, you can lessen your risk for exposure to COVID-19. If you, or someone you frequently interact with, are considered higher-risk for severe illness from COVID-19, it’s especially important you take precautions and limit your time away from home. Here are 5 questions to consider when making decisions about activities away from home:
Are you going to a place where physical distancing may be more difficult to maintain?
What types of safety precautions are in place at the location you’re visiting?
What personal protective measures can you consider taking before leaving home (i.e., bring a cloth face covering, carry hand sanitizer)?
Is it possible to go alone or to limit the size of your group?
Are there other ways to accomplish your goal without leaving your house?
High-Risk Categories
Adults age 65+ and/or people with serious underlying medical conditions are at the highest risk of severe illness from COVID-19. Maricopa County Public Health data shows nearly 50% of those admitted to the ICU are 65 years or older. The data also indicates more than 60% of those hospitalized for COVID-19 have a chronic medical condition. These conditions include, but are not limited to: hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes, and heart disease.

Be Healthy, Be Responsible
Public Health data shows anyone can get infected with COVID-19 including children. That’s why Public Health advises all residents to take the following precautions in public:
Stay at least six feet away from others
Consider wearing a cloth face covering if you cannot maintain at least six feet of distance between yourself and others while out
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth
Use hand sanitizer or wash your hands thoroughly after visiting public locations
