More Testing, More Cases
The number of people diagnosed with COVID-19 in Maricopa County each day is increasing; today’s data shows the largest daily increase in cases (up 246 over yesterday). This is because more testing is being done in the community, so more cases are being found. With increased testing, we expect increased case counts, however, case counts are not the only data we have to assess what is happening in our community.
However, case counts are not the only data we have to assess what is happening in our community. The hospitalization rate over time allows us to see trends in serious cases of the disease. The hospitalization epi curve allows us to see trends over time in serious cases of the disease and is not impacted by the amount of testing done. In Maricopa County, the curve remains relatively flat. Currently, about 15% of COVID-19 cases in Maricopa County have required hospitalization, down from 20% a few weeks ago, and about 4% are requiring ICU care, which is down from 6% a few weeks ago. This reflects more people with mild illness getting tested.
