How We're Finding Safer Spaces for Vulnerable Residents

April 28th Press Conference with Human Services Department and Circle the City |

Easing the Burden
The Human Services Department has helped move some people experiencing homelessness out of a cramped tent encampment in downtown Phoenix and into voluntary, socially distanced spaces nearby. In this setting, people have access to cold water, hand-washing stations, and more importantly, to Human Services Department staff who can connect them with services that can help them end their homelessness. According to one woman who received help, “I have never seen anybody so caring in my life.”

Health Care for the Homeless
For decades, Circle the City has been providing medical services for homeless individuals in our region. During the pandemic, the organization has partnered with Maricopa County to connect more people with the care—and, in some cases, testing—they need.

Two Types of Tests
There’s a lot of talk about ramping up COVID-19 testing, but it’s important to distinguish between two types of tests.
-
Diagnostic tests (usually PCR) help medical providers determine whether a person has evidence of active infection. This testing informs our daily COVID-19 case count.
-
Antibody tests, also known as serology tests, look for the presence of antibodies that are made by the body and indicate a recent or past infection; antibody tests are not as helpful for diagnosing active infections.
Families and Long-Term Facilities
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced a new rule that facilities must inform residents, along with residents’ families and representatives, of COVID-19 cases in their facilities. Individuals who have questions about facilities where their loved ones reside are encouraged to contact the facility with questions.
Not sure what to ask? AARP has a list of 6 questions to ask if your loved one is in a long-term care facility.
