Week of April 17th

Maricopa County remains under the official declaration of a local emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic, while the State of Arizona remains under a “Stay Home” order.  The Maricopa County Joint Information Center (JIC) is compiling a weekly list of resources for County residents to manage the physical, economic, social and emotional impacts of this declaration.  Residents are encouraged to visit maricopa.gov/COVID-19 for the most up-to-date information.

Additional Data Available on COVID-19

Arizona Department of Health Services now provides data on COVID-19 cases by zip code.  While it may be tempting to look for “hot spots” or jump to other conclusions based on this data, Public Health wants residents to be aware of the limitations of this data.  Whether you see 5 cases or 50 cases in your zip code, know that COVID-19 is circulating in your community and the limited availability of testing makes it likely there are more cases than have been reported. 

Maricopa County Public Health is also providing additional data to the public including cases and hospitalization rates for those with chronic medical conditions.  Maricopa County data shows nearly 60% of those hospitalized for COVID-19 have at least one chronic health condition, with hypertension (high blood pressure) and diabetes the most common conditions associated with hospitalization due to COVID-19.  

All residents are encouraged to continue taking precautions to prevent illness: stay home as much as you can, stay six feet away from others outside your home, and wash your hands routinely.

Help for Individuals

This is a time of great community need.  Whether it’s financial assistance, healthcare or mental health needs, or job connections, you can find resources at arizonatogether.org. 

Help for Businesses

Employers can get their questions about COVID-19 answered by calling into a free hotline run by Maricopa County Public Health.  Just dial 2-1-1 and follow the prompts to get to the Business line for Maricopa County.  The hotline is available Monday-Friday between 9 am and 5 pm.

Watch out for Scams

It’s tempting to chase the promise of a cure to COVID-19.  Public Health wants to remind everyone, though, the FDA has not authorized any home testing kit, cures or treatments for COVID-19.  You should report any attempted scam or fraud to the National Center for Disaster Fraud Hotline at 866-720-5721 or disaster@leo.gov.

Media Briefings

Maricopa County will be providing regular briefings on various aspects of the county’s COVID-19 response.  These briefings will typically occur Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 1 p.m.  Members of the public who want to watch can do so by subscribing to our YouTube channel or visiting youtube.com/maricopacountyaz.

Members of the public can get the latest information on the county response to COVID-19 by visiting maricopa.gov/COVID19. You may also want to follow Maricopa County and Maricopa County Public Health on social media.  There are updates available in both English and Spanish.
