Maricopa County received 54 National Association of Counties (NACo) Awards in 2016 for various department and inter-departmental initiatives. We are extremely proud of all who earned NACo awards at the 2017 ceremony and have highlighted a few below.

The Maricopa County Parks and Recreation department received a NACo award for their efforts contributing towards the Prickly Pedal Mountain Bike race that spans District 3 and 4. Riders take on rugged terrain between Cavecreek and Lake Pleasant. The race has quickly become one of Arizona top bike races. |
The Maricopa County Public Health department created a mobile device application called "Maricopa Healthy" to encourage and inspire a healthier lifestyle through providing healthy recipies, park and trail information, and local activities that all lend a hand to living a healthier lifestyle. |

The Maricopa Trail and Park Foundation’s is holding its “Wildlife Along the Maricopa Trail” Volunteer Trail Steward Workshop. The workshop will be hosted by the Arizona Game & Fish Department at the Arizona Game & Fish Headquarters

• Learn how to recognize many of the wildlife and bird species seen along the route of the Maricopa Trail
• Attendees will receive a copy of the “Critters of Arizona” pocket guide featuring the state’s most commonly seen wildlife and birds (first 35 registered attendees)
• Learn how to handle wildlife encounters with javelina, bobcats, mountain lions, bears, snakes, bees, bats, skunks and scorpions
• Understand how to handle all the holes in the ground around the bushes and plants near the Maricopa Trail – what are they?

Expansion projects along busy corridors to improve commutes, commercial travel
These projects will increase capacity on key commerce corridors including Interstate 10, State Route 189, US 93 and Interstate 17 under the Arizona Department of Transportation’s construction program covering fiscal years 2018 through 2022.
On Friday, the State Transportation Board approved an annual update to ADOT’s Five-Year Transportation Facilities Construction Program, which includes projects in Greater Arizona and the Maricopa County and Pima County regions. This followed a three-month comment period allowing the public and agencies to provide feedback.
