Testifying at the Legislature in favor of HB 2152

Barney HB 2152

Proposed by the Maricopa County Air Quality Department, this bill removes the sunset provision for the Arizona Emissions Bank and prohibits any discounting of certified credits deposited into the bank. Currently, Maricopa County is designated as a nonattainment area for two National Ambient Air Quality Standards. The Bank allows the county to work towards achieving attainment standards, while also promoting economic growth.

Project Updates

Sidewalk connection completed in Sun Lakes

The Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) recently completed a new section of sidewalk on Riggs Road near the Sun Lakes community. The new sidewalk allows residents to safely get to shopping centers and medical offices. The sidewalk from Saddletree Drive to Alma School Road is a perfect example of MCDOT’s Mission – Providing Connections that Improve People’s Lives! Upon completion of the project, Inspector Elvira Seta wrote: “I lost count of how many residents are happy and told me: ‘Thank you for doing this for us and you all did the great job.’ We don’t get compliments from the public much so I feel so proud that I was part of this project and that we made so many people happy.”

Chairman Denny Barney praises collaboration that cleared path for new Intel factory

Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Chairman Denny Barney, District 1, issued the following statement about Intel’s February 8 announcement:

“I’m excited about Intel’s plans to build a new $7 billion semiconductor factory in the East Valley.  Projects this big don’t happen without a lot of collaboration, and I’m proud of Maricopa County’s role in clearing the path for a project that will create so many high-paying, high-tech jobs. The Maricopa County Air Quality Department has been working cooperatively with Intel on the air permitting process, and the Board of Supervisors has made it a priority to ensure we are creating a regulatory environment that allows large and small businesses to succeed and families to thrive. [Intel’s] announcement is proof that what we are doing, together with local and state leaders, is working.”

Supervisors Urge Teens: “Say Something, Do Something.”

Maricopa County Supervisors gave a boost to a movement intended to prevent school tragedies. “Speak up, stand up, and possibly save a life. That’s the goal,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman Denny Barney, District 1.

“The Care Enough to Get in the Way” movement aims to give youth the confidence and the resources to report troubling social media posts or comments to law enforcement or school representatives. It is backed by several county Police Chiefs, members of Leadership West Class 22, the organization Youth4Youth, and now, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors.

“If we can save one life, it’s worth it,” Barney said.
