Census 2020 Update

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Census 2020 data collection and processing were delayed. Because of this, Census 2020 data releases have been likewise delayed. The Census Bureau now anticipates releasing state population counts by April 30, 2021, four months later than originally planned. They have also announced that data used for redistricting will not be available until September 30, 2021, six months later than originally planned.

The Census Bureau has updated the official statistical name for the Phoenix metropolitan area (consisting of Maricopa County and Pinal County). The new name, which reflects the three largest municipalities in the region, is the Phoenix-Mesa-Chandler metropolitan statistical area (MSA). As new datasets are released and incorporated into MAG publications, the name of the MSA, where applicable, will be updated.

Population Estimates

The MAG Regional Council has adopted the July 1, 2020, population estimates for jurisdictions in the MAG region. These population estimates are created in conjunction with the State Demographer, and are updated every year. The estimates and methodology can be found here.

ACS Updates

MAG provides a variety of products that use American Community Survey (ACS) data including interactive map viewers, data dashboards, and infographics. The Arizona demographics map viewer, Community Profiles dashboard, and commute shed reports have been updated to include the recently released 2019 ACS 5-year estimates.

The Census Bureau’s ACS is an ongoing survey that measures socioeconomic conditions of the nation’s resident population. The Census Bureau releases data annually that provide estimates based on surveys collected over 1-year and 5-year periods. Topics in the ACS include education, income, poverty, housing, employment, and more. The ACS is used for a variety of programs, including grant applications, economic development, population studies, human services planning, and more.

Virtual Maps & Data Training

MAG has powerful interactive map viewers and exclusive regional datasets that anyone can access from any online device. These easy-to-use resources are a valuable addition to your data toolbox. We also hold free virtual training sessions to help you discover and explore MAG maps and data tools. If you’ve been to one before, come again and bring a colleague! We keep our datasets, dashboards, and reports fresh and up to date. Dates and times for the 2021 MAG Maps & Data virtual workshops are now posted on the map viewer training site, with links to the Eventbrite registration sites. The first workshop is March 16!
