Construction crews are scheduled to begin installing the first of two cattle guards near the Interstate 40 traffic interchange and State Route 95 junction (milepost 201.25) Monday, Jan. 20 through Jan. 23 as part of the ongoing wildlife fencing project in the area.
Overnight work hours will be 8:30 p.m. to 6 a.m., during which the roadway will be narrowed to one lane with a flagging operation.
A second cattle guard (milepost 201.95) is scheduled to be installed Monday Jan. 27 through Jan. 30. Work will take place nightly from 8:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. During working hours, the eastbound off-ramp at I-40 (Exit 9) will be closed. Traffic will be detoured to Exit 13, and back to Exit 9 westbound.
Flaggers will be directing traffic. The speed limit will be reduced, and motorists are advised to slow down, and be aware of construction workers and equipment within the zone.
The $1 million project, a partnership between ADOT, Arizona Game and Fish Department, Federal Highway Administration and U.S. Bureau of Land Management, is an effort to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions, by installing new wildlife fencing along a 12-mile corridor of State Route 95 from just north of Lake Havasu City to south of the Interstate 40 traffic junction (mileposts 189-201).
The existing fence will be replaced with a four-foot-high fence designed to contain wild burros on the west side of SR 95, where there is access to water in the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge.
Work is scheduled Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. While most of the work will take place off the roadway, motorists are advised to slow down, and be aware of construction workers and equipment within the work zone.
The project is expected to be completed in spring 2014.
