ADOT reminds drivers to plan for 18-mile detour route
PHOENIX - Drivers heading into the Valley on Interstate 17 should plan for a full closure of the southbound travel lanes and frontage road this Friday night in North Phoenix. Crews are scheduled to install the last two spans of a new pedestrian bridge that crosses I-17 near Jomax Road at the Central Arizona Project (CAP) canal. Drivers will use an 18-mile detour. Services – including fuel, water and restrooms – are limited on the detour route, so ADOT reminds all drivers to plan accordingly. Closure and detour information is as follows:
● Southbound I-17 closed between Loop 303 and Happy Valley Road from 11:30 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Saturday (June 9). DETOUR: Exit at Loop 303 westbound to Lake Pleasant Parkway southbound to Happy Valley Road eastbound to re-connect with I-17.
● Read our blog and watch our PSA for more information.
● The last opportunities to find fuel and other services prior to the detour are off State Route 74 (Carefree Highway) east of I-17. Services are not available again until drivers reach the area of Lake Pleasant Parkway and Happy Valley Road in Peoria. See a map of the detour route here.
When it opens later this summer, the pedestrian bridge will provide access over I-17 for users of the CAP Aqueduct Trail system. Crews set the spans over northbound I-17 last weekend.
