Long-range transportation improvements recommended for Kayenta Township

 

KAYENTA – The Kayenta Township and the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) invite the Kayenta community and all interested stakeholders to attend a public meeting regarding recommended long-range transportation improvements focusing on all modes of transportation within the Kayenta Township. The public meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 19, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m., Mountain Daylight Time, at the Kayenta Town Hall. A presentation will begin at 6:15 p.m.

 At the public meeting, the project team will offer materials and a presentation regarding specific recommended projects and implementation strategies, answer questions and seek public input. Navajo translation will be available, and a meal will be served. The purpose of the Kayenta Township Transportation Study is to identify long-term improvements needed within the Township boundary to address a broad range of local and regional planning issues related to roadway, transit and non-motorized transportation modes, such as pedestrian sidewalks, bicycle paths and equestrian trails. Samples of potentially recommended projects include paving residential streets; increasing Navajo Transit service; and constructing a new equestrian bridge over Laguna Wash.

 This long-range multimodal transportation study will not result in any immediate transportation improvements, but will generate a list of projects recommended for implementation by the Kayenta Township in five-, 10-, and 20-year timeframes. The study will provide a guideline for improving mobility and access for people and goods, environmental protection and quality of life, community planning and coordination, economic competitiveness, tourism and recreation, and accessibility and safety. Ultimately, a final report will be prepared with comprehensive and focused recommendations for all transportation modes of private vehicles, transit, bicycles and pedestrians.

 The study is funded through the ADOT Planning Assistance for Rural Areas (PARA) Program.
