The following updates a previous alert to add closures of the northbound I-17 on-ramp at Peoria Avenue, as well as closures of the north-and southbound frontage roads between Peoria Avenue and Cactus Road.
The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers who use Peoria Avenue at Interstate 17 to plan for several weekend closures and restrictions at this interchange beginning Aug. 28 while crews construct drainage improvements. Three additional closures are planned in September.
ADOT urges you to slow down and use caution around construction personnel and equipment while the following restrictions are in place:
New Restrictions and Closures

East- and westbound Peoria Avenue will be closed between 27th Drive and 25th Avenue from 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 28 until 5 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 31. There will also be additional lane restrictions on eastbound Peoria Avenue between 35th and 27th avenues, as well as on westbound Peoria Avenue between 19th and 25th avenues, during the road closure.
- Detour: Drivers can use Cactus Road or Dunlap Avenue to access I-17 via 35th and 19th avenues.
- Both northbound and southbound frontage roads closed between Cactus and Peoria. The southbound frontage road will have local access only to Biltmore Drive.
- Detours: Use 19th or 35th avenues. Local access available via 25th Avenue or 28th Drive.

Northbound frontage road closed to local traffic only between Dunlap and Peoria.
- Detour: Use 19th Avenue for through traffic. Additional local access available via 25th Avenue.
Ramp Closures
- The north- and southbound I-17 off-ramps and the northbound I-17 on-ramp at Peoria Avenue will be closed from 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 28, until 5 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 31.
- Detour: Drivers can enter or exit I-17 at Dunlap Avenue and Cactus Road.
Ongoing Closures
- The southbound I-17 on-ramp at Peoria Avenue will remain closed for construction through September.
- Detour: Drivers may use Dunlap Avenue or Cactus Road to enter southbound I-17.
- The southbound I-17 frontage road between Peoria and Dunlap avenues remains closed for construction through September.
- Detour: Drivers can use 35th and 19th avenues as alternate routes. Business access will be available via 28th and 29th avenues and Metro Parkway East.
ADOT is constructing improvements to the storm water drainage system along I-17 between Greenway Road and Dunlap Avenue to reduce the potential for flooding. The improvements include constructing a new storm drain system to direct storm water into the Arizona Canal Diversion Channel, new drainage basins at Thunderbird Road, and removing the existing pump stations at the cross streets.
